What is an area converter?

An area converter changes a surface measurement from one unit into every other unit at once — square millimetres, square centimetres, square metres, square kilometres, square inches, square feet, square yards, acres and hectares. Instead of hunting for a separate factor for each pair of units, you enter a single value, pick the unit it is in, and the tool returns every equivalent area in one view.

Area measures two dimensions (length times width), so its units are squared versions of length units. That is why one square metre is far larger than one square centimetre, and why mixing the two by mistake throws results off by a factor of ten thousand. How does the area converter work?

The converter uses a base-unit method: it turns your value into square metres first, then divides by each target unit’s size in square metres. The square metre is the SI-derived unit of area, so every other unit can be written as a fixed multiple of it.

The exact two-step formula is:

base (m²) = value × (m² per source unit)

result = base (m²) ÷ (m² per target unit)

The imperial factors are exact because they derive from the international foot: one inch is exactly 0.0254 m, so a square inch is 0.0254² = 0.00064516 m², a square foot is 0.09290304 m², and a square yard (9 ft²) is 0.83612736 m². Here are three worked examples that match the converter’s output exactly because they use the same square-metre factors.

Example 1 — 1 acre to square feet. A plot is listed as 1 acre and you want square feet.

  1. Convert to the base unit: base = 1 × 4046.8564224 = 4046.856 m².
  2. Divide by the square-foot factor: 4046.8564224 ÷ 0.09290304 = 43,560 ft².

Tips and common mistakes

A few errors trip people up when converting area:

  • Treating area like length. A square foot is not “a foot converted.” To go from m² to ft² you divide by 0.09290304 (the square of 0.3048), not by 0.3048. The tool handles the squaring for you.
  • Confusing cm² and m². There are 10,000 cm² in one m², not 100. Squaring the centimetre-to-metre factor (100) gives 100² = 10,000.
  • Mixing acres and hectares. They are close in feel but not equal — one hectare is about 2.471054 acres, so a hectare is the larger unit. Reversing the factor inflates or shrinks land size noticeably.
  • Rounding too early. If you round 1 m² to “10.8 ft²” and reuse it, errors compound. Keep full precision until the final step; the tool keeps 7 significant figures.

Limitations and notes

This converter handles two-dimensional area only — flat surface measurements. It does not convert length (use a one-dimensional tool for that) or volume, which uses cubed factors. It assumes the modern international definitions of the inch, foot, yard and acre; a few historical or survey units, such as the US survey acre, differ very slightly and are not included here.
