How the Attendance Calculator Works

This calculator turns your raw class counts into an attendance percentage and tells you exactly where you stand against a required threshold. Enter how many classes you attended, how many were held in total, and your required attendance (commonly 75%). It instantly returns your current percentage, whether you are on track, and either how many more classes you can safely miss or how many you must attend in a row to catch up.

The Formula

Attendance percentage is a simple ratio:

Attendance % = (classes attended ÷ total classes held) × 100

To see how many future classes you can skip while staying at or above your target T:

Classes you can miss = ⌊(100 × attended − T × total) ÷ T⌋

And if you are below target, the number of classes you must attend consecutively to reach T is:

Classes to attend = ⌈(T × total − 100 × attended) ÷ (100 − T)⌉

Worked Example

Suppose you have attended 42 of 50 classes and your college requires 75%:

  • Attendance = 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%
  • Since 84% ≥ 75%, you are on track.
  • Classes you can still miss = ⌊(100 × 42 − 75 × 50) ÷ 75⌋ = ⌊(4,200 − 3,750) ÷ 75⌋ = ⌊6⌋ = 6 classes

Now suppose you had only attended 30 of 50 classes (60%). You are below 75%, so:

  • Classes to attend in a row = ⌈(75 × 50 − 100 × 30) ÷ (100 − 75)⌉ = ⌈(3,750 − 3,000) ÷ 25⌉ = ⌈30⌉ = 30 classes

Why Attendance Percentage Matters

In most institutions, falling below the minimum attendance bars you from sitting an exam or carries a fee penalty. Tracking your percentage live lets you:

  • Plan absences around medical appointments, travel or events without breaching the rule.
  • Recover early — knowing you need 30 straight classes is far more useful in week 4 than in the final week.
  • Avoid surprises at the end of the term when the shortfall can no longer be made up.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my attendance percentage?+

Divide the number of classes you attended by the total number of classes held, then multiply by 100. For example, if you attended 42 out of 50 classes, your attendance is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.

How many classes can I miss and still keep 75% attendance?+

You can miss classes as long as attended ÷ total stays at or above 0.75. The number you can still skip is the floor of (100 × attended − 75 × total) ÷ 75. This calculator works it out automatically once you enter your numbers and a 75% target.

How many classes do I need to attend to reach 75%?+

If you are below target, attend classes back-to-back. The count needed is the ceiling of (target × total − 100 × attended) ÷ (100 − target). The tool shows this 'attend in a row' figure whenever you are below your required percentage.

Does missing one class affect my attendance a lot?+

The impact depends on your total. With few classes held, one absence drops your percentage sharply; with many classes, the same absence barely moves it. That is why your attendance stabilises as the term progresses.

What attendance percentage do most colleges require?+

Most universities and schools require a minimum of 75% attendance to be eligible to sit exams, though some set it at 70% or 80%. Always check your institution's specific rule, as the threshold is set by policy, not by a fixed formula.
