How the Audiobook Speed Calculator Works
This calculator tells you exactly how long an audiobook will take at a faster (or slower) playback speed, and how much time you save versus listening at normal 1x speed. Enter the book’s length in hours and minutes, set your playback speed (1.5x, 2x, 3x — whatever you use in Audible, Libby, or your podcast app), and it instantly returns the new finish time, the time saved, and the original length for comparison.
The math is simple but easy to get wrong: doubling the speed does not double the time you save. The relationship between speed and time saved is non-linear, which is why a calculator helps.
The Formula
The two values come from one duration in seconds:
Finish time = total duration ÷ speed Time saved = total duration × (1 − 1 ÷ speed)
The finish time is straightforward — playing audio twice as fast means it ends in half the time. The time-saved formula matters because the savings shrink as you push the speed higher: most of the benefit comes from the first jump above 1x.
Worked Example
For a 10-hour 30-minute audiobook played at 1.5x speed:
- Total duration = 10.5 hours = 37,800 seconds
- Finish time = 37,800 ÷ 1.5 = 25,200 seconds = 7 hours
- Time saved = 37,800 × (1 − 1 ÷ 1.5) = 37,800 × 0.333 = 12,600 seconds = 3 hours 30 minutes
So a 10.5-hour book finishes in 7 hours at 1.5x, saving you three and a half hours.
Why Faster Speeds Save Less Than You Think
The time saved follows a curve of diminishing returns. Going from 1x to 2x saves half your time; going from 2x to 4x saves only another quarter. This is why most listeners settle around 1.5x to 2x — beyond that, comprehension drops while the extra time saved keeps shrinking.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate audiobook time at a faster speed?+
Divide the audiobook's total length by your playback speed. A 10-hour book at 1.5x speed takes 10 ÷ 1.5 = 6.67 hours, or about 6 hours 40 minutes. The faster the speed, the shorter the finish time.
How much time do I save listening at 1.5x?+
At 1.5x you save the original duration times (1 − 1 ÷ 1.5), which is one third of the time. A 10-hour audiobook saves about 3 hours 20 minutes, finishing in 6 hours 40 minutes instead of 10 hours.
How long does a 10-hour audiobook take at 2x speed?+
At 2x speed a 10-hour audiobook takes 10 ÷ 2 = 5 hours, saving you 5 hours. Doubling the speed always halves the listening time, so any book finishes in half its stated length.
Is the time saved the same as the speed increase?+
No. Going from 1x to 2x feels like double speed but only saves half the time, not double. Time saved follows 1 − 1 ÷ speed, so 2x saves 50%, 1.5x saves 33%, and 1.25x saves 20%.
What is a good audiobook listening speed?+
