How the Cricket Run Rate Calculator Works
This tool computes the three numbers commentators quote most: the current run rate (CRR), the required run rate (RRR) for a chase, and the projected total at the current pace. Enter the runs scored and overs bowled; add the innings length and a target to unlock the required rate and projection.
The Formula
Run rate is runs per over, but overs must first be converted from cricket’s overs.balls notation into decimal overs:
Decimal overs = whole overs + (balls ÷ 6) Current run rate (CRR) = runs ÷ decimal overs Required run rate (RRR) = (target − runs) ÷ (total overs − overs bowled) Projected total = CRR × total overs
The figure after the decimal point is a ball count from 0 to 5, so 18.3 overs is 18 overs and 3 balls, equal to 18.5 decimal overs. An entry like 18.6 is invalid because six balls complete an over.
Worked Example
A team has scored 120 runs in 18.3 overs, chasing a target of 165 in a 20-over innings.
- Decimal overs = 18 + 3/6 = 18.5
- CRR = 120 ÷ 18.5 = 6.49 runs/over
- Overs remaining = 20 − 18.5 = 1.5
- Runs needed = 165 − 120 = 45
- RRR = 45 ÷ 1.5 = 30.00 runs/over
- Projected total = 6.49 × 20 ≈ 130

Reading the Numbers
When the required run rate climbs well above the current run rate, as in the example, the chase is slipping away. When RRR sits at or below CRR, the batting side is comfortably ahead of the asking rate. The projected total assumes the present scoring pace continues, which is useful early in an innings but less reliable once wickets fall or the powerplay ends.

Run rate drives in-game strategy in limited-overs cricket (ODIs, T20s, and The Hundred), helps captains set fields, and feeds into net run rate, the tiebreaker that often decides which teams progress in a tournament. Knowing how to convert overs correctly is the key to getting all of these figures right.

How is run rate calculated in cricket?+
Run rate is runs divided by overs bowled. Because an over has six balls, overs are converted to a decimal first: 18.3 overs means 18 overs and 3 balls, which is 18 + 3/6 = 18.5 decimal overs. So 120 runs in 18.3 overs is a current run rate of 120 / 18.5 = 6.49 runs per over.
What is required run rate (RRR)?+
Required run rate is the runs the chasing team still needs divided by the overs remaining. It tells the batting side how fast they must score to win. RRR = (target - runs scored) / (total overs - overs bowled). If a team needs 45 runs from 1.5 overs remaining, the required rate is 45 / 1.5 = 30 per over.
Why are overs entered as 18.3 and not 18.5?+
Cricket counts balls, not tenths. The figure after the decimal point is the number of legal balls bowled in the current over, from 0 to 5, because six balls complete an over. So 18.3 means 18 overs plus 3 balls. The calculator converts that to 18.5 decimal overs (3 balls = half an over) before dividing.
How do you project a final total from the run rate?+
Multiply the current run rate by the total number of overs in the innings. At a CRR of 6.49 over a 20-over innings, the projected total is 6.49 x 20 which rounds to about 130. It assumes the team keeps scoring at the same rate, so it is an estimate rather than a guarantee.
Does net run rate use this same formula?+
Net run rate (NRR) is a tournament tiebreaker that subtracts the run rate conceded from the run rate scored across all matches. It uses the same runs-divided-by-overs idea but aggregates a team's full for-and-against record. This tool computes single-innings current and required run rates rather than tournament NRR.
