How the Crop Yield Calculator Works

Crop yield is simply how much you harvested divided by the land it came from. This calculator takes your total production and field area and reports the yield two ways, per hectare and per acre, so you can compare against benchmarks in either system. It also shows the total harvest in metric tonnes.

Enter the harvested weight in kilograms, pounds, or tonnes, and the area in hectares or acres.

The Formula

Yield per area = total production ÷ area

Because farms and benchmarks mix imperial and metric units, the calculator converts internally: 1 acre = 0.4047 hectares, 1 pound = 0.4536 kilograms, and 1 tonne = 1,000 kilograms. It then divides the normalized production by the normalized area for each reporting unit.

Worked Example

You harvest 9,000 kg of grain from a 2-hectare field:

  • Yield per hectare = 9,000 ÷ 2 = 4,500 kg/ha
  • 2 ha = 4.942 acres, so yield per acre = 9,000 ÷ 4.942 = 1,821 kg/acre
  • Total = 9.0 tonnes

If the same field had been measured as 4.942 acres, the per-acre and per-hectare results would be identical, since the calculator converts area for you.

Using Yield Figures Well

  • Compare like with like. Match moisture content and grading standards before comparing fields or seasons.
  • Track over time. Year-on-year yield per hectare reveals soil, variety, and management trends a single total cannot.
  • Convert bushels first. If your records are in bushels, multiply by the crop’s standard test weight to get kilograms before entering them.
  • Pair with cost data. Yield per area combined with input cost per area gives margin per area, the figure that drives farm decisions.

How do I calculate crop yield?+

Divide the total harvested weight by the field area. If you harvested 9,000 kg from 2 hectares, the yield is 9,000 ÷ 2 = 4,500 kg per hectare. The same total over 4.94 acres works out to about 1,821 kg per acre.

How do I convert yield from per acre to per hectare?+

One hectare equals 2.471 acres, so multiply a per-acre yield by 2.471 to get the per-hectare figure, or divide a per-hectare yield by 2.471 to get per acre. This calculator reports both at once so you do not have to convert by hand.

What units does the crop yield calculator use?+

You can enter production in kilograms, pounds, or metric tonnes, and area in hectares or acres. The result is shown as kilograms per hectare and kilograms per acre, plus the total in tonnes, so it works for any crop measured by weight.

Why is yield reported per unit area instead of total?+

Yield per area lets you compare fields, seasons, and farms of different sizes on equal footing. A 50-tonne harvest sounds large, but only yield per hectare reveals whether the land performed well relative to its size and to regional benchmarks.

How do I handle yields quoted in bushels?+

A bushel is a volume-based unit whose weight differs by crop, for example about 27.2 kg of corn or 27.2 kg of soybeans per bushel under US standards. Convert bushels to weight using your crop's standard test weight first, then enter that weight here.
