How the Cubic Feet Calculator Works

This calculator finds the volume of any box-shaped space in cubic feet, plus cubic yards, cubic meters and US gallons. Enter the length, width and height, pick your measurement unit, and it converts and computes the volume instantly.

The Formula

For a rectangular box:

Cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × height (ft)

If you measured in another unit, convert each dimension to feet first:

  • inches ÷ 12 = feet
  • yards × 3 = feet
  • centimeters ÷ 30.48 = feet
  • meters ÷ 0.3048 = feet

A handy shortcut for inches: multiply all three inch measurements and divide by 1,728, since one cubic foot equals 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 cubic inches.

Worked Example

For a shipping box measured at 6 ft long, 4 ft wide and 3 ft high:

  • Volume = 6 × 4 × 3 = 72 ft³
  • Cubic yards = 72 ÷ 27 = ≈ 2.67 yd³
  • Cubic meters = 72 × 0.0283168 = ≈ 2.039 m³
  • Gallons = 72 × 7.48052 = ≈ 539 US gallons

Why Cubic Feet Matters

Cubic feet is the standard unit for measuring volume and capacity in the US. You will use it to:

  • Size storage and shipping — moving boxes, freight, self-storage units and appliances are rated in cubic feet.
  • Order bulk materials — soil, mulch, gravel and concrete are bought by the cubic foot or cubic yard.
  • Rate appliances — refrigerators, freezers and microwaves list interior capacity in cubic feet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cubic feet?+

Multiply length by width by height, with all three measured in feet. A box 6 ft long, 4 ft wide and 3 ft high holds 6 × 4 × 3 = 72 cubic feet. If you measured in inches, divide each measurement by 12 to convert to feet before multiplying.

How do I convert inches to cubic feet?+

Multiply the three dimensions in inches, then divide by 1,728, because one cubic foot equals 1,728 cubic inches (12 × 12 × 12). A box 24 × 18 × 12 in is (24 × 18 × 12) ÷ 1,728 = 3 cubic feet.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?+

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. To convert cubic feet to cubic yards, divide by 27. This matters when ordering concrete, soil or mulch, which are sold by the cubic yard.

How do I find the cubic feet of a refrigerator or freezer?+

Measure the interior length, width and height in inches, multiply them together, and divide by 1,728. A fridge interior of 30 × 24 × 60 in is (30 × 24 × 60) ÷ 1,728 = 25 cubic feet of storage space.

How many cubic feet are in a gallon?+

One cubic foot holds about 7.48 US gallons of liquid. To convert cubic feet to gallons, multiply by 7.48052. A 72 cubic foot tank holds 72 × 7.48052 ≈ 539 US gallons.
