This dog age chart converts your dog’s age into human years using the modern, vet-backed AKC size-based method — not the outdated “multiply by 7” myth. Why Size Matters
Dogs do not age at a single fixed rate. Two things change the math:
- Puppies age fast. A dog reaches roughly 15 human years by its first birthday and about 24 by its second.
- Big dogs age faster after that. From year three onward, small breeds gain about 4 human years per dog year, while giant breeds gain 7 to 9. That is why a giant breed at 10 is far “older” than a Chihuahua at 10.

How accurate is the multiply-by-7 dog age rule?+
The old multiply-by-7 rule is a rough myth. Dogs age very fast in their first two years, then slow down, and large breeds age faster than small ones. This chart uses the modern AKC size-based method, which is far closer to how dogs really age.
Why do bigger dogs age faster than small dogs?+
Large and giant breeds reach old age sooner — a small dog may live 15 to 16 years while a giant breed often lives 8 to 10. That is why this chart gives different human-year equivalents for each size class once a dog passes about five years old.
How old is a 7-year-old dog in human years?+
