How the Dog Pregnancy Calculator Works

This calculator estimates your dog’s whelping (due) date from the day she was bred. Enter the breeding or mating date, and it returns the estimated due date plus the normal 58-68 day gestation window so you know the realistic range for the litter’s arrival.

Canine pregnancy is short and remarkably consistent compared with humans. From a single confirmed mating, most dogs deliver about 63 days later, which is why day 63 is the headline due date. Because eggs and sperm stay viable for several days around ovulation, breeders treat the result as a window rather than a guarantee.

The Formula

Estimated due date = breeding date + 63 days Normal whelping window = breeding date + 58 days to + 68 days

The 63-day figure is the average gestation length for domestic dogs of all breeds. The calculator also shows day 58 (earliest expected) and day 68 (latest expected) so you can prepare a whelping box in advance and know when to call your vet if labor has not started.

Worked Example

For a dog bred on June 14, 2026:

  • Estimated due date = June 14 + 63 days = August 16, 2026
  • Earliest (day 58) = June 14 + 58 days = August 11, 2026
  • Latest (day 68) = June 14 + 68 days = August 21, 2026

So you would have the whelping area ready by around August 11 and contact your vet if no puppies have arrived by August 21.

A Note on Accuracy

Counting from the mating date is a reliable estimate, but ovulation-based timing is more precise: a vet can pinpoint ovulation with progesterone testing, and puppies are then delivered about 63 days after the LH surge with very little variation. If your dog was mated several times over a few days, count from the first mating for the earliest possible date and the last mating for the latest. Always confirm pregnancy and monitor late gestation with your veterinarian, especially for first-time or high-risk mothers.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a dog pregnant?+

Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days, or roughly nine weeks, measured from the day of mating. The normal range is 58 to 68 days, so a healthy litter can arrive a few days either side of the 63-day average without cause for concern.

How do I calculate my dog's due date?+

Add 63 days to the breeding or mating date. For example, if your dog was bred on June 14, the estimated due date is around August 16. Because gestation varies, expect whelping any time between day 58 and day 68.

Why is the due date a range and not an exact day?+

Sperm can survive for several days in the female and an egg is fertile for a window after ovulation, so conception may not match the mating date exactly. Counting from ovulation (day 63 after the LH surge) is more precise, but mating-date counting still lands within the 58-68 day window.

What are the signs my dog is about to give birth?+

In the 24 hours before whelping, a dog's body temperature usually drops below 100°F (37.8°C), she may refuse food, become restless, nest, and pant. Take a rectal temperature twice daily near the due date to catch the drop that signals labor is near.

When can a vet confirm dog pregnancy?+

A vet can confirm pregnancy by ultrasound from around day 25-30, by blood test for relaxin from about day 30, and by X-ray after day 45 once the puppies' skeletons are visible, which also helps count the litter size before whelping.
