How the FFMI Calculator Works
This calculator finds your Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) — a measure of muscularity that, unlike BMI, excludes body fat. Enter your weight, height and body fat percentage in metric or imperial units. It returns your raw FFMI, your height-adjusted normalized FFMI, and your lean mass, then places you in a muscle category.
The Formula
First convert weight and fat into lean mass:
Lean mass = weight × (1 − body fat %)
Then compute the index, with lean mass in kilograms and height in meters:
FFMI = lean mass (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Finally, normalize to a 1.8 m reference height so people of different heights compare fairly:
Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in meters)
Worked Example
For a man weighing 80 kg at 15% body fat and 1.8 m tall:
- Lean mass = 80 × (1 − 0.15) = 68 kg
- FFMI = 68 ÷ 1.8² = 68 ÷ 3.24 = ≈ 21.0
- Normalized FFMI = 21.0 + 6.1 × (1.8 − 1.8) = 21.0
A 1.70 m man with the same 68 kg of lean mass would have a raw FFMI of 23.5, but a normalized FFMI of 24.1 — showing how normalization keeps the comparison fair.

What is FFMI?+
FFMI stands for Fat-Free Mass Index. It measures how much lean (fat-free) mass you carry relative to your height, similar to how BMI uses total weight. Because it ignores fat, FFMI is a better gauge of muscularity than BMI for athletes and lifters.
How do I calculate FFMI?+
First find lean mass: weight × (1 − body fat percentage). Then divide lean mass in kilograms by your height in meters squared. For an 80 kg person at 15% body fat and 1.8 m tall, lean mass is 68 kg and FFMI is 68 ÷ 1.8² ≈ 21.
What is normalized FFMI and why is it used?+
Normalized FFMI adjusts the raw value to a reference height of 1.8 m using the formula FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in meters). It removes the slight advantage shorter people have on the raw index, so people of different heights can be compared on the same scale.
What is a good FFMI?+
For men, a normalized FFMI around 20 to 21 is average, 22 to 23 is well-muscled, and 24 to 25 is excellent. Values near 25 are considered the approximate natural ceiling, while sustained values above about 26 are rarely reached without performance-enhancing drugs.
Is FFMI accurate?+
FFMI is only as accurate as the body fat percentage you enter, which is the largest source of error. Use a reliable method such as DEXA, hydrostatic weighing or calipers rather than a rough estimate. FFMI also does not distinguish muscle from other lean tissue like bone and water.
