How the HST Calculator Works

This calculator adds or removes Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) or Goods and Services Tax (GST) for any Canadian province. Enter an amount, pick the province, and choose whether your amount is before tax (add mode) or already includes tax (remove mode). It returns the net price, the tax, and the tax-inclusive total.

The Rates

Canada blends a 5% federal GST with provincial taxes in different ways:

HST provinces: Ontario 13%; Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, and PEI 15%. GST-only: Alberta and the territories 5%. GST + separate PST/QST: BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec charge 5% GST plus a provincial tax handled separately.

The Formula

Add tax: tax = net × rate; total = net + tax Remove tax: net = total ÷ (1 + rate); tax = total − net

Worked Example

For a $100 pre-tax purchase in Ontario (13% HST):

  • Tax = 100 × 13% = $13.00
  • Total = 100 + 13 = $113.00

To reverse it, a $113 Ontario total gives net = 113 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 and HST = $13.00.

Frequently asked questions

What is HST in Canada?+

HST stands for Harmonized Sales Tax. It combines the 5% federal GST with a provincial sales tax into a single rate in the provinces that have adopted it. Ontario charges 13% HST, while Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island charge 15%.

Which provinces use HST and which use GST?+

Ontario and the four Atlantic provinces use HST. Alberta and the three territories charge only the 5% GST. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec charge 5% GST plus a separate provincial tax (PST or QST), which this calculator does not combine into the HST figure.

How do I remove HST from a total price?+

Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For a $113 Ontario total at 13% HST, the net price is 113 ÷ 1.13 = $100, and the HST portion is 113 − 100 = $13. Switch this calculator to remove mode to do it automatically.

What is the HST rate in Ontario?+

Ontario's HST rate is 13%, made up of the 5% federal GST and an 8% provincial portion. On a $100 pre-tax purchase the HST is $13, for a total of $113. Some items, such as basic groceries and certain medical goods, are zero-rated or exempt.

Is GST the same across Canada?+

Yes, the federal GST rate is 5% everywhere in Canada. The difference between provinces is whether that 5% is bundled into a single HST rate, charged on its own, or charged alongside a separate provincial PST or QST that is calculated independently.
