How the Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator Works
Engagement rate is the single most quoted metric for measuring how well an Instagram account resonates with its audience. This calculator turns raw post numbers into a clean ER% so you can compare posts, track growth, and price collaborations. Enter your likes and comments (and optionally saves and shares), then your followers and, if you have it, your reach.
The Formula
There are two standard versions of the engagement rate formula:
ER by followers (%) = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100 ER by reach (%) = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ reach × 100
ER by followers is the benchmark used by media kits and influencer databases because follower counts are public. ER by reach is more precise because it divides by the number of accounts that actually saw the post, but reach is only visible inside Instagram Insights.
Worked Example
A post on a 12,000-follower account gets 850 likes and 60 comments:
- Total engagements = 850 + 60 = 910
- ER by followers = 910 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = ≈ 7.58%
If that same post reached 9,000 accounts, the ER by reach = 910 ÷ 9,000 × 100 = ≈ 10.11%, which is the share of viewers who interacted.
Engagement Rate Benchmarks by Account Size
Engagement rate falls as accounts grow, so judge yourself against your own size tier rather than against mega-influencers.
| Account size | Typical engagement rate |
|---|---|
| Under 5,000 (nano) | 4% – 8% |
| 5,000 – 20,000 (micro) | 2% – 5% |
| 20,000 – 100,000 (mid) | 1.5% – 3% |
| Over 100,000 (macro) | 1% – 2% |
How to Improve Your Engagement Rate
- Post when your audience is active — check Insights for peak hours and publish then.
- Write captions that ask questions to drive comments, which weigh more than likes.
- Encourage saves and shares with carousels, guides and quotable graphics.
- Prune inactive followers — fake or dormant followers dilute every engagement metric.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?+
Add up all engagements on a post (likes + comments, plus saves and shares if you have them), divide by your follower count, then multiply by 100. For example, a post with 850 likes and 60 comments on a 12,000-follower account has an engagement rate of (910 ÷ 12,000) × 100 ≈ 7.58%.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?+
For most accounts an engagement rate of 1% to 3.5% is considered good, 3.5% to 6% is high, and above 6% is very high. Smaller accounts under 10,000 followers usually see higher rates than large accounts, so compare against accounts of a similar size.
Should I use followers or reach for engagement rate?+
ER by followers is the most common public benchmark and works when you only know likes and comments. ER by reach (engagements ÷ accounts reached) is more accurate because it measures the people who actually saw the post, but reach is only visible to the account owner in Instagram Insights.
Do saves and shares count toward engagement?+
Yes. Saves and shares are strong engagement signals that Instagram weighs heavily in its ranking. Include them when you have the data. This calculator lets you add saves and shares as optional fields so your engagement rate reflects all interactions, not just likes and comments.
Why is my engagement rate dropping as I gain followers?+
Engagement rate is a ratio, so as your follower count grows the same number of likes and comments produces a smaller percentage. Large accounts naturally have lower percentage engagement than small accounts, which is why you should benchmark against accounts in your own size tier.
