How the LCM Calculator Works

The least common multiple (LCM) of a set of numbers is the smallest positive number that every one of them divides into evenly. This calculator accepts two or more positive whole numbers and returns the LCM along with the GCD for reference.

The Method

The fastest way to find the LCM of two numbers uses their greatest common divisor:

LCM(a, b) = (a × b) ÷ GCD(a, b)

For a longer list, the tool applies this rule pairwise: it finds the LCM of the first two numbers, then combines that result with the next number, and so on across the whole set. Using GCD keeps the intermediate values small and exact.

Worked Example

Find the LCM of 4, 6 and 8:

So the LCM of 4, 6 and 8 is 24 — the smallest number all three divide into without a remainder.

Where the LCM Is Used

The LCM solves many everyday and classroom problems:

• Adding fractions — you need a common denominator, which is the LCM of the denominators.
• Scheduling — events that repeat every few days line up again after their LCM of days.
• Gears and cycles — repeating patterns synchronise at their least common multiple.

Knowing both the LCM and the GCD gives you a complete picture of how a set of numbers relates.
