How the Minecraft Enchantment Calculator Works
This tool helps you plan anvil combines without wasting XP or hitting the dreaded “Too Expensive!” wall. Pick an enchantment, the level you want, whether you are applying it from a book or another item, and how many times the target tool and the sacrifice (book/item) have each been through an anvil. It returns the enchantment’s maximum level, an approximate anvil cost in XP levels for that single combine, and whether it is allowed in Survival.
The cost is approximate: exact totals depend on the order you combine items and the prior work each has built up. The calculator models one combine in which the target has no existing levels of the chosen enchantment. Data reflects Minecraft Java Edition 1.21, including the newer mace enchantments (Density, Breach, Wind Burst). Bedrock edition uses slightly different costs.
The Anvil Cost Formula
The anvil level cost for a single Java Edition combine is:
Cost = enchantment level × multiplier + target prior-work penalty + sacrifice prior-work penalty Prior-work penalty (each item) = 2^(that item’s anvil uses) − 1
Two details matter and are why our number is approximate rather than exact:
- The anvil adds the prior-work penalty of both the target and the sacrifice item — not just the target.
- For a book sacrifice the enchantment cost uses the difference between the final and the existing level on the tool. The calculator assumes the tool starts with none of that enchantment, so the difference equals the full level.
Each enchantment has a multiplier. From a book, Sharpness, Efficiency, Protection and Power are cheap (×1), while Thorns, Silk Touch, Infinity, the curses and Soul/Swift enchants are expensive (×4). The book and item columns differ per enchantment (the calculator uses the exact wiki values), so applying from another item is usually — but not always — costlier than from a book.
The Prior-Work Penalty
Every item remembers how many times it has been worked in an anvil. The penalty added by that item to the next combine grows by doubling:

After a combine, the resulting item’s new penalty count becomes 2 × (larger of the two penalties) + 1, which is why repeated work escalates so fast. Because one item’s penalty alone reaches 31 after five uses, and the Survival/Adventure anvil rejects any combine costing 40 levels or more (39 is the maximum allowed), order matters enormously.
Worked Example
Suppose you want Sharpness V on a sword from a fresh book, the sword has already been worked twice, and the book is unworked:
- Enchantment cost = level 5 × book multiplier 1 = 5 levels
- Target prior-work penalty = 2² − 1 = 3 levels
- Sacrifice (book) prior-work penalty = 2⁰ − 1 = 0 levels
- Approx. total = 5 + 3 + 0 = ~8 levels — well under the cap, so it is allowed.
Now imagine that same sword had been worked 6 times: its penalty alone is 63, pushing the total past 40 and the anvil shows Too Expensive!.
How to Avoid Too Expensive
- Combine books together first, then apply the single merged book to a fresh tool last.
- Apply your most-penalised item last in the sequence.
- Use a fresh tool with zero prior work when possible.
- Remember that Mending and curses carry high multipliers — add them early while the penalty is still low.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my anvil say Too Expensive?+
In Survival mode the anvil refuses any combine that costs 40 levels or more, showing 'Too Expensive!'. This is almost always caused by the prior-work penalty, which doubles each time an item passes through the anvil. Combine your enchanted books together first, then apply the merged book to a fresh tool last.
What is the prior-work penalty in Minecraft?+
Every item tracks how many times it has been used in an anvil. Each item's penalty is 2 to the power of that count, minus 1: 0, 1, 3, 7, 15, 31, 63 levels and so on, and a single anvil combine adds the penalties of BOTH the target and the sacrifice item. After a combine the result's count becomes 2 × the larger of the two penalties + 1, so once an item alone reaches the 31 to 63 range it quickly becomes too expensive to modify further in Survival.
Does the order I combine enchantments matter?+
Yes. Combining books with each other first keeps their penalties low, then a single application to the tool adds only one prior-work step. Repeatedly applying single books to the same tool stacks the doubling penalty fast and quickly hits the Too Expensive limit.
What is the maximum enchantment level in Minecraft?+
It varies by enchantment. Sharpness, Efficiency, Power and Protection cap at level V; Unbreaking, Fortune and Looting at III; Knockback and Punch at II; and many like Mending, Silk Touch, Flame and Infinity have only level I. This calculator shows the max for each enchantment you pick.
Is the anvil cost different from a book versus another item?+
Yes. Each enchantment has a separate book multiplier and item multiplier, and for most enchantments the book multiplier is lower, so applying from a book is usually cheaper than transferring from another enchanted item. A few enchantments (such as Protection, Sharpness, Efficiency, Power, Loyalty and Piercing) cost the same either way. Books are generally the cheapest and safest way to apply enchantments, which is why this tool defaults to book costs.
