How the Percentile Rank Calculator Works

This tool reports where a value stands within a data set as a percentile rank: the percentage of values at or below it. Paste your numbers (separated by commas or spaces), enter the value you care about, and the calculator returns its percentile rank along with the count of values below it.

The Formula

The standard percentile-rank formula counts ties at half weight:

PR = (number below + 0.5 × number equal) ÷ N × 100

where N is the total number of values. The half-weight term keeps the result unbiased when several scores match your value, which is why it is the version taught in most statistics courses.

Worked Example

Take the data set 55, 60, 65, 70, 72, 80, 85, 90, 95 (N = 9) and a value of 80.

  • Values below 80: 55, 60, 65, 70, 72 → 5 values
  • Values equal to 80: 1 value
  • PR = (5 + 0.5 × 1) ÷ 9 × 100 = 5.5 ÷ 9 × 100 = 61.1

So a score of 80 sits at roughly the 61st percentile of this group.

Reading the Result

A higher percentile rank means a stronger relative position. A rank of 90 means you scored at or above 90% of the group; a rank of 25 means three-quarters of the group scored higher. Because the rank depends entirely on the comparison group, the same raw score can have very different percentile ranks in different data sets.

Where Percentile Rank Is Used

Percentile rank appears on standardized test reports (SAT, GRE, IQ tests), in pediatric growth charts, in salary benchmarking, and in any setting where relative standing matters more than the raw number. Reporting a percentile rank lets people compare performance across different scales and groups on a common 0–100 footing.

What is percentile rank?+

Percentile rank is the percentage of scores in a data set that fall at or below a given value. A percentile rank of 80 means the value is equal to or higher than 80% of the data. It describes relative standing, not the raw score itself, which is why it is widely used to report test results.

How do you calculate percentile rank?+

Count how many values are below your score, add half the number of values equal to it, divide by the total number of values N, and multiply by 100. In symbols, PR = (below + 0.5 x equal) / N x 100. Counting ties at half weight is the standard convention used by most statistics texts.

What is the difference between percentile and percentile rank?+

A percentile is a score below which a given percentage of data falls (for example, the 90th percentile is the value at the 90% mark). Percentile rank works in the other direction: you start with a value and find the percentage of data at or below it. They are inverses of each other.

Why count tied values at half weight?+

Counting half of the values equal to your score gives a balanced, unbiased estimate of relative position when there are ties. It is the definition used in classic psychometrics and most statistics courses, and it keeps the lowest and highest values from being forced to exactly 0 or 100.

What does a percentile rank of 50 mean?+

A percentile rank of 50 means the value sits at the median: it is at or above roughly half of the data set. Scoring at the 50th percentile is exactly average relative to the group, with as many values below as above it.
