How the Pond Volume Calculator Works

This calculator finds how much water your garden or koi pond holds, in both US gallons and liters. Enter the pond’s length, width, and average depth in feet, then choose its shape. The shape factor corrects for ponds that are oval, irregular or circular rather than a perfect rectangle.

The Formula

Pond volume builds on the basic box volume, adjusted by a shape factor:

Volume (ft³) = length × width × average depth × shape factor Gallons = Volume (ft³) × 7.48052

The shape factor is 1.0 for rectangular ponds, 0.85 for oval or irregular ponds, and 0.785 (π ÷ 4) for circular ponds. There are 7.48052 US gallons in one cubic foot of water; multiply gallons by 3.785 for liters.

Worked Example

For an oval pond 10 ft long, 6 ft wide, with a 2 ft average depth:

  • Volume = 10 × 6 × 2 × 0.85 = 102 ft³
  • Gallons = 102 × 7.48052 = ≈ 763 US gallons
  • Liters = 763 × 3.785 = ≈ 2,888 liters

Why Pond Volume Matters

Knowing your exact pond volume lets you:

  • Dose treatments correctly — dechlorinator, beneficial bacteria, algaecide and fish medication are all measured per a set number of gallons.
  • Size your equipment — pumps and filters are rated to turn over the full pond volume, ideally once every 1–2 hours.
  • Stock fish safely — koi and goldfish need a minimum number of gallons each to stay healthy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the volume of my pond in gallons?+

Multiply length × width × average depth in feet, then multiply by a shape factor (1.0 for rectangular, 0.85 for oval or irregular). Multiply the cubic feet by 7.48052 to get US gallons. A 10 x 6 ft oval pond 2 ft deep holds about 762 gallons.

Why use a shape factor for ponds?+

Few ponds are perfect rectangles. An oval or irregular pond does not fill the full length-by-width box, so a factor of about 0.85 corrects for the rounded edges. A circular pond uses 0.785, which is pi divided by 4.

What is the average depth of a pond?+

Average depth is the typical water depth across the pond, found by averaging several depth readings or, for a sloped pond, taking the shallow plus the deep depth divided by two. Use this average rather than the deepest point.

Why do I need to know my pond's volume?+

Pond volume sets the correct dose of water treatments, dechlorinator and medication, the right pump and filter size, and a safe fish stocking level. Dosing by guesswork can harm fish or waste product.

How many gallons should a koi pond be?+

A common guideline is at least 250 gallons per koi, with 500 gallons or more preferred as they grow. Knowing your exact volume from this calculator lets you stock responsibly and keep water quality stable.
