How the Rabbit Age Calculator Works

This tool converts your rabbit’s age into human years so you can understand your bunny’s life stage. Enter your rabbit’s age in years, and it returns the human-equivalent age, the life stage, and a full rabbit-to-human-years chart with your rabbit’s row highlighted.

The Conversion Model

Rabbits develop fast, then settle into a steadier pace:

Year 1 = about 20 human years Year 2 = about 27 human years Each year after = about +6 human years

This reflects how quickly rabbits reach maturity — most are fully grown by their first birthday.

How to Use It

  1. Enter your rabbit’s age in years (half-years are fine, e.g. 0.5).
  2. Read the human-year estimate and life stage instantly.
  3. Scan the chart — the row closest to your rabbit’s age is highlighted.

Caring for Rabbits at Each Stage

  • Baby / young (under 1 year) — growth, gentle handling and a vet-guided diet transition.
  • Adult (1–5 years) — unlimited hay, fresh greens and plenty of exercise.
  • Middle-aged (5–8 years) — watch weight and dental health.
  • Senior (8+ years) — softer bedding, easy litter access and twice-yearly vet checks.

These numbers are estimates. Breed size, diet, housing and veterinary care all influence how an individual rabbit ages, so treat the chart as a helpful guide rather than an exact figure.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert rabbit years to human years?+

Rabbits mature very quickly. A common model puts a rabbit's first year at about 20 human years, the second at about 27, and then adds roughly 6 human years for each rabbit year after that. So a 4-year-old rabbit is around 39 human years.

How long do pet rabbits live?+

Well-cared-for indoor rabbits typically live 8 to 12 years, and some reach beyond that. Spaying or neutering, a hay-based diet, safe housing and regular vet care all help rabbits reach a longer, healthier lifespan.

At what age is a rabbit a senior?+

Most rabbits are considered middle-aged from about 5 years and senior from around 8. Senior rabbits may slow down, gain or lose weight, and benefit from softer bedding, easier litter access and more frequent vet checks.

Do small and large rabbit breeds age differently?+

Yes. Smaller breeds like Netherland Dwarfs often live longer than giant breeds such as Flemish Giants, which tend to have shorter lifespans. This calculator gives a general estimate that works as a guide across breeds.

When do rabbits reach adulthood?+

Rabbits reach sexual maturity between about 3 and 6 months depending on breed size, and are usually fully grown by around one year. That rapid early development is why the first rabbit year counts for so many human years.
