How the Saudi Arabia VAT Calculator Works
This calculator works out Value Added Tax (VAT) for Saudi Arabia at the standard 15% rate set by ZATCA. Enter an amount in SAR and choose a mode: Add VAT when your figure is the net (tax-exclusive) price, or Remove VAT when it is the gross (tax-inclusive) total. The tool returns the net, the VAT and the VAT-inclusive total.
Saudi Arabia introduced VAT at 5% in January 2018 and raised it to 15% on 1 July 2020, where it has remained. The rate field is editable so you can also handle zero-rated supplies by entering 0.
The Formula
To add VAT to a net price:
VAT = net × 15% Gross = net + VAT
To remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price (work backwards):
Net = gross ÷ 1.15 VAT = gross − net
Worked Example
Adding VAT to a net price of SAR 1,000:
- VAT = 1,000 × 15% = SAR 150
- Gross = 1,000 + 150 = SAR 1,150
Removing VAT from a gross price of SAR 1,150:
- Net = 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = SAR 1,000
- VAT = 1,150 − 1,000 = SAR 150
A common shortcut for the VAT hidden in a gross price is VAT = gross × 15 ÷ 115. Here that is 1,150 × 15 ÷ 115 = SAR 150, matching exactly.
VAT Reference Table

|---|---|---|
| 100 | 15.00 | 115.00 |
| 500 | 75.00 | 575.00 |
| 1,000 | 150.00 | 1,150.00 |
| 5,000 | 750.00 | 5,750.00 |
When to Add vs Remove VAT
- Add VAT (net): use when a quote or price list is shown before tax — typical for B2B quotes where VAT is added at invoicing.
- Remove VAT (gross): use when a shelf price, receipt or advertised price already includes the 15% — common for consumer purchases where you need the net for accounting.
Treating a VAT-inclusive price as net and adding 15% again double-counts the tax, so always match the mode to the price you have.
This tool performs the standard ZATCA add and remove VAT arithmetic and rounds to two decimals. It does not decide which rate applies to a specific product or handle reverse-charge and import VAT. It is for general guidance only — confirm current rates and rules with ZATCA or a qualified tax adviser before filing returns or issuing invoices.
Frequently asked questions
What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?+
The standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%, in force since 1 July 2020 and administered by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA). It applies to most goods and services, while exports and certain supplies are zero-rated or exempt.
How do I add 15% VAT to a price in SAR?+
Multiply the net price by 0.15 to get the VAT, then add it to the net. On a net SAR 1,000, the VAT is 1,000 × 0.15 = SAR 150, so the VAT-inclusive total is SAR 1,150.
How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?+
Divide the gross amount by 1.15 to get the net price, then subtract to find the VAT. A gross SAR 1,150 gives a net of 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = SAR 1,000 and VAT of SAR 150.
Are any goods exempt from VAT in Saudi Arabia?+
Yes. Exports of goods and services outside the GCC, certain international transport, and some financial services and residential real estate are zero-rated or exempt. This calculator handles the standard 15% rate; change the rate field for zero-rated items.
Is the VAT calculation the same for businesses and consumers?+
The arithmetic is identical. Businesses charge 15% output VAT on sales and reclaim input VAT on purchases, while consumers simply pay the VAT-inclusive price. The add and remove formulas in this tool apply to both.
