How the Watering Frequency Calculator Works

This calculator tells you how often to water your lawn or garden. Plants need a certain amount of water each week, but you apply it in sessions of a set depth. By dividing the weekly need by the per-session depth — after adjusting for climate and rainfall — the tool returns sessions per week and the days between watering.

The Formula

Adjusted weekly need = weekly need x climate factor - rainfall Sessions per week = adjusted weekly need / water per session Days between watering = 7 / sessions per week

The climate factor scales the base need: cool or rainy weather lowers it, hot or arid weather raises it. Recent rainfall is subtracted directly, since rain counts toward the weekly total.

Worked Example

A lawn with a 1 inch per week base need, watered at 0.5 inch per session, in mild weather (factor 1.0), with no rain this week:

  • Adjusted need = 1 x 1.0 - 0 = 1 inch/week
  • Sessions per week = 1 / 0.5 = 2 sessions
  • Days between = 7 / 2 = every 3.5 days

Now suppose a hot, dry spell (factor 1.4) and 0.2 inch of rain:

  • Adjusted need = 1 x 1.4 - 0.2 = 1.2 inch/week
  • Sessions per week = 1.2 / 0.5 = 2.4 sessions
  • Days between = 7 / 2.4 = about every 2.9 days

Tips for Smarter Watering

  • Water deeply, not often. Fewer, longer sessions push roots deeper and build drought resistance.
  • Count the rain. Subtract recent rainfall from the weekly need so you do not overwater.
  • Adjust with the season. Raise the climate factor in summer heat and lower it in cool or wet periods.
  • Measure your output. Place cans under the sprinkler to learn how long it takes to apply 0.5 inch, then set your timer.

Most lawns need about 1 inch of water per week. If you apply about 0.5 inch per session, that is two sessions a week, roughly every 3 to 4 days. Hot, dry weather increases the need; rainfall reduces it.

One inch of water means enough to wet the soil to a depth of about 6 inches for most soils. You can measure it by placing a few empty tuna cans on the lawn and timing how long your sprinklers take to fill them to 1 inch.

Should I water in the morning or evening?+

Early morning is best. It lets water soak in before the heat of the day and lets leaves dry, which reduces fungal disease. Evening watering leaves foliage damp overnight and can encourage mold and mildew.
