This is not a diagnosis.

This is an educational self-reflection screener, not a medical or psychological assessment. Only a qualified mental-health professional can diagnose borderline personality disorder (BPD). If you are struggling, please reach out to a doctor or therapist. If you are in crisis or thinking about self-harm, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line such as 988 (US) right away.

Over the last several years, how often has each statement described you? Answer honestly — there are no right answers.

A Free, Educational BPD Self-Screening

This tool is a gentle, educational way to reflect on whether the traits associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD) resonate with your experience. It asks one question for each of the nine recognised BPD trait areas and shows you a reflection based on how many you mark as often or almost-always true.

Important: this is not a diagnosis. No online quiz can diagnose BPD or any mental-health condition. Only a trained professional can do that, through a proper clinical assessment. Treat your result as a starting point for a conversation with a doctor or therapist, not as an answer.

How to Use the Screener

  1. Think about the last several years of your life, not just a recent rough patch.
  2. For each of the nine statements, choose how often it has described you, from “Rarely/never” to “Almost always.”
  3. Tap See my reflection for a summary and guidance. The tool counts an area as present when you select “Often” or “Almost always.”
  4. Tap Start over to reset.

The Nine BPD Trait Areas

#Trait area
1Frantic efforts to avoid abandonment
2Unstable, intense relationships
3Unstable self-image or sense of identity
4Impulsive, potentially harmful behaviour
5Recurrent self-harm or related thoughts
6Intense, rapidly shifting moods
7Chronic feelings of emptiness
8Intense anger or difficulty controlling it
9Stress-related suspiciousness or feeling disconnected

Clinicians look for five or more of these traits being persistent and pervasive — but that judgement requires a professional, not a checklist.

What Your Result Means (and Does Not Mean)

A higher count means more of these traits resonate with you, which can be a meaningful prompt to seek a professional evaluation. A lower count does not rule anything out, and a higher count does not confirm anything. Many traits on this list overlap with other conditions, with normal stress, or with experiences like trauma — which is exactly why a careful, in-person assessment matters.

Help Is Available

BPD is highly treatable. Therapies such as dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and other evidence-based approaches help many people lead full, stable lives. If this screener has raised concerns, please consider talking with a doctor or mental-health professional — reaching out is a sign of strength.

If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, get help now: in the US, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Anywhere else, contact your local emergency number or crisis service. You do not have to face this alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can this BPD test diagnose me?+

No. This is an educational self-reflection screener, not a diagnostic tool. Only a qualified mental-health professional can diagnose borderline personality disorder, after a full assessment. Use your result as information to bring to a doctor or therapist, not as a verdict.

What does the BPD test measure?+

It asks one question for each of the nine recognised BPD trait areas, such as fear of abandonment, unstable relationships, identity shifts, impulsivity, mood swings, chronic emptiness and intense anger. You rate how often each describes you over the last several years.

What score suggests BPD?+

In clinical settings, a professional looks for five or more of the nine traits being persistently present. This tool flags when you mark five or more areas as often or almost-always true, but that is only a prompt to seek a professional opinion, never a diagnosis.

Is borderline personality disorder treatable?+

Yes. BPD is highly treatable. Evidence-based therapies such as dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) help many people build coping skills, steadier relationships and a stronger sense of self. Reaching out for support is a positive, effective step.

What should I do if I am in crisis?+

If you are thinking about self-harm or suicide, please reach out for help immediately. In the US you can call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Elsewhere, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line. You deserve support right now.
