The Formula
Percentage = (points earned ÷ points possible) × 100
The percentage is then mapped to a letter grade using the standard scale below.
Worked Example
Say an essay was marked 42 out of 50:
- Percentage = (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%
- 84% falls in the B band (83-86%)
- On a 4.0 scale that is about 3.0 grade points
