How the International Roaming Cost Calculator Works

This calculator estimates what you will pay to use your phone abroad. International roaming is what your carrier charges when your phone connects to a foreign network instead of your home network. The three big cost drivers are data, voice calls and text messages, plus an optional daily roaming pass that some carriers offer. Enter your trip length and your carrier’s rates, and the tool adds everything up.

The Formula

The total roaming cost is the sum of each usage type multiplied by its rate:

Total = (days × MB per day × data rate) + (minutes × call rate) + (texts × text rate) + (days × daily pass)

Data is almost always the largest line item, because modern phones sync, stream and update in the background. If your carrier offers a flat daily pass, set the per-MB, per-minute and per-text rates to the pass’s overage rates and put the pass price in the daily-pass field instead.

Worked Example

Suppose you travel for 7 days, use about 300 MB per day at $0.02/MB, make 60 minutes of calls at $0.50/min, and send 20 texts at $0.05 each, with no daily pass:

  • Data = 7 × 300 × $0.02 = $42.00
  • Calls = 60 × $0.50 = $30.00
  • Texts = 20 × $0.05 = $1.00
  • Daily pass = 7 × $0 = $0.00
