How the IV Drip Rate Calculator Works

When fluids are given by gravity rather than a pump, you control the flow by counting drops per minute (gtt/min). This calculator works out that rate, along with the equivalent pump rate in mL/hr, from three inputs: the volume to infuse, the infusion time in minutes, and the drop factor of your tubing. Everything updates live as you type.

It is a fast way to check a hand-regulated infusion or to translate a doctor’s order into the number you actually count at the roller clamp.

The Formula

The classic nursing drip-rate formula is:

gtt/min = (volume in mL × drop factor in gtt/mL) ÷ time in minutes

The pump-rate equivalent simply spreads volume across the hours:

mL/hr = volume in mL ÷ time in hours

Worked Example

You need to infuse 1,000 mL over 8 hours using 20 gtt/mL macrodrip tubing:

  • Time in minutes = 8 × 60 = 480 minutes
  • gtt/min = (1,000 × 20) ÷ 480 = 20,000 ÷ 480 = 41.7 ≈ 42 drops/min
  • mL/hr = 1,000 ÷ 8 = 125 mL/hr

So you would either count 42 drops per minute by gravity or program 125 mL/hr into a pump.

Tips for Accurate Infusions

Round the drop rate to the nearest whole drop, since you cannot count a fraction of a drop. When verifying by hand, count drops for a full minute rather than for 15 seconds and multiplying, as short counts magnify errors. How do you calculate IV drip rate in drops per minute?+

Multiply the volume to infuse in millilitres by the tubing drop factor, then divide by the infusion time in minutes. For 1,000 mL over 480 minutes with 20 gtt/mL tubing, the rate is (1,000 × 20) / 480 = about 42 drops per minute.

What is a drop factor?+

The drop factor is the number of drops the IV tubing delivers per millilitre, printed on the package. Macrodrip sets are typically 10, 15, or 20 gtt/mL and are used for routine fluids, while microdrip sets are 60 gtt/mL and are used for small or precise volumes such as pediatric infusions.

How do I convert mL/hr to drops per minute?+

Multiply the mL/hr rate by the drop factor and divide by 60. For 125 mL/hr with a 20 gtt/mL set, that is (125 × 20) / 60 = about 42 gtt/min. The calculator does this automatically when you enter the total volume and time.

What is the difference between drip rate and pump rate?+
