The Formula
First convert your score to a percentage, then look up the band:
Percentage = (points earned ÷ points possible) × 100
The percentage is then mapped to a letter using the common plus/minus scale:

Worked Example
Suppose you scored 87 out of 100 on an exam:
- Percentage = 87 ÷ 100 × 100 = 87%
- 87% falls in the B+ band (87–89.9%)
- B+ is worth 3.3 points on a 4.0 scale
If instead you earned 44 out of 50, the percentage is 44 ÷ 50 × 100 = 88%, which is still a B+.
Choosing the Right Scale
Grading scales vary by institution. The most common are:
- Plus/minus scale (used here) — splits each letter into +/- bands for finer GPA resolution.
- 10-point scale — 90–100 A, 80–89 B, 70–79 C, 60–69 D, below 60 F, with no plus or minus.
- Stricter college scales — some require 94%+ for an A or use a 7-point spread.
