How the Playback Speed Calculator Works

This calculator shows exactly how long a video, lecture, online course, recorded meeting, or podcast will take at a faster playback speed, plus how much time you save versus watching at normal 1x speed. Enter the content’s length in hours and minutes, choose your playback speed (1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x — the options in YouTube, Coursera, VLC, or your video player), and it instantly returns the new watch time, the time saved, and the original length for comparison.

It is the same underlying math whether you are speeding up an Udemy course, a university lecture recording, or a backlog of saved videos — and it answers the question students and self-learners ask most: how much faster will I actually finish?

The Formula

Both results derive from the duration converted to seconds:

New watch time = total duration ÷ speed Time saved = total duration × (1 − 1 ÷ speed)

The watch time is intuitive — play at twice the speed and it ends in half the time. The time-saved formula is the one people get wrong, because the savings do not scale linearly with speed.

Worked Example

For a 1-hour 45-minute lecture played at 1.5x speed:

  • Total duration = 105 minutes = 6,300 seconds
  • New watch time = 6,300 ÷ 1.5 = 4,200 seconds = 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Time saved = 6,300 × (1 − 1 ÷ 1.5) = 6,300 × 0.333 = 2,100 seconds = 35 minutes

So a 1 hour 45 minute lecture takes just 1 hour 10 minutes at 1.5x, freeing up 35 minutes.

Why Higher Speeds Give Diminishing Returns

The biggest time savings come from the first jump above 1x. Moving from 1x to 2x cuts your time in half; jumping further from 2x to 4x only saves another quarter of the original. That is why most people land around 1.5x to 2x — comprehension stays high while the marginal time saved keeps shrinking.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate video time at a faster playback speed?+

Divide the video's length by the playback speed. A 1-hour lecture at 2x speed takes 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 hours, or 30 minutes. The same formula works for YouTube, online courses, recorded meetings and podcasts.

How much time do I save watching at 2x?+

At 2x speed you save half the time — the original duration times (1 − 1 ÷ 2) = 0.5. A 2-hour video finishes in 1 hour and saves you 1 hour. Doubling the speed always halves the watch time.

How long is a 1-hour 45-minute video at 1.5x?+

A 1 hour 45 minute (105 minute) video at 1.5x takes 105 ÷ 1.5 = 70 minutes, or 1 hour 10 minutes. You save 35 minutes compared with watching at normal speed.

Does 2x speed save twice as much time as 1x?+

No. Time saved follows 1 − 1 ÷ speed, not the speed itself. So 2x saves 50% of the time, 1.5x saves 33%, and 3x saves 67%. The savings grow more slowly the higher you push the speed.

What playback speed is best for lectures and tutorials?+

Most viewers find 1.5x to 2x ideal for lectures and tutorials — fast enough to save real time while keeping speech intelligible. Dense or technical material is easier at 1.25x to 1.5x; review and familiar content can go to 2x or 3x.
