How the Reading Speed Calculator Works
This calculator measures how fast you read in words per minute (WPM) — the standard metric for reading speed. Enter the number of words you read and the time it took (minutes and seconds), and it returns your WPM, a reading-level label, and your equivalent words per hour.
To use it on any text, count or estimate the word count of a passage, start a timer, read at your natural pace, then enter both values.
The Formula
WPM = words read ÷ time in minutes
Where time in minutes converts any seconds you spent:
time in minutes = minutes + (seconds ÷ 60)
Words per hour is simply your WPM multiplied by 60.
Worked Example
Suppose you read a 1,000-word article in 4 minutes and 0 seconds:
- Time in minutes = 4 + (0 ÷ 60) = 4 minutes
- WPM = 1,000 ÷ 4 = 250 words per minute
- Words per hour = 250 × 60 = 15,000 words per hour
A speed of 250 WPM is right around the average for an adult reading non-fiction.
