How the Steps to Calories Calculator Works
This calculator turns a step count into calories burned. Steps alone do not determine energy use — your body weight, walking pace, and stride length all matter. The tool converts steps to distance, distance to walking time, and then applies the standard MET (metabolic equivalent) formula to estimate calories.

The Formula
Distance = steps × stride length Walking time = distance ÷ walking speed Calories = MET × weight (kg) × hours
Faster walking has a higher MET value (around 3.5 for a moderate pace and up to ~6.7 for a fast power walk), so the same number of steps burns more calories when you walk briskly.
Worked Example
For 10,000 steps at a 70 kg weight, a moderate pace (MET 3.5, ~4.8 km/h), and a 0.76 m stride:
- Distance = 10,000 × 0.76 = 7,600 m = 7.6 km
- Time = 7.6 ÷ 4.8 ≈ 1.58 hours (95 min)
- Calories = 3.5 × 70 × 1.58 ≈ 387 kcal

Walking faster raises the MET value and the calories per minute, even though brisk walking also covers the same distance in less time.

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?+
For a 70 kg (154 lb) person walking 10,000 steps at a moderate pace, that is roughly 7.6 km and about 280 to 320 calories. The exact number depends on your body weight, walking speed and stride length, since heavier and faster walkers burn more per step.
How are calories from steps calculated?+
Steps are first converted to distance using your stride length, then to walking time using your pace. Calories are estimated with the MET formula: calories = MET × body weight in kg × hours walked. A higher walking speed has a higher MET value and burns more per minute.
Does body weight change calories burned per step?+
Yes, significantly. Moving a heavier body costs more energy, so a 90 kg person burns noticeably more calories over the same 10,000 steps than a 60 kg person. That is why this calculator asks for your weight rather than using a fixed calories-per-step figure.
What stride length should I use?+
A typical adult stride is about 0.76 m (around 30 inches), but it varies with height. As a rough guide, stride length is roughly 0.41 to 0.45 times your height. If your fitness tracker reports your average stride, enter that value for the most accurate distance.
Are these calories the same as my fitness tracker shows?+
They will be close but not identical. Trackers use their own algorithms, may count incidental movement, and often report gross rather than net calories. This calculator gives a solid estimate from established MET values; treat any tool's calorie figure as an approximation.
