How the Swim Pace Calculator Works

This tool turns any swim into a clear, comparable number. Enter the total distance you swam, choose meters or yards, and add the total time in hours, minutes and seconds. The calculator returns your pace per 100, your speed, and the total time, all updating live.

Pace is the language swimmers use to plan sets, pick race strategy and track progress, because it strips out the distance and tells you exactly how hard you were swimming per length.

The Formula

Pace is simply time spread evenly across each 100 units of distance:

Pace per 100 = total time (seconds) ÷ (distance ÷ 100)

Speed is the inverse idea, distance covered per second:

Speed = distance ÷ total time (seconds)

A lower pace is faster; a higher speed is faster. They describe the same swim from two directions.

Worked Example

Suppose you swim 1,500 meters in 25 minutes flat:

  • Total time = 25 × 60 = 1,500 seconds
  • Number of 100 m segments = 1,500 ÷ 100 = 15
  • Pace = 1,500 ÷ 15 = 100 seconds = 1:40 per 100 m
  • Speed = 1,500 ÷ 1,500 = 1.00 m/s

So you held a steady 1:40/100m, a solid endurance pace.

Why Pace Matters for Training

Pace lets you compare a 400 m effort with a 1,500 m effort fairly, design interval sets (“ten 100s on 1:50”), and pace a race so you do not start too fast. Tracking your per-100 pace over weeks is one of the cleanest ways to see fitness gains, because the number drops as you get faster regardless of the set distance.

Pace Reference Table

These per-100m paces show the total time for common workout distances:

Use the calculator above to find your exact pace from any distance and time, then set a target pace for your next workout.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my swim pace per 100 meters?+

Divide your total swim time in seconds by the number of 100-meter segments you swam. For 1,500 m in 25:00 (1,500 seconds), that is 1,500 / (1,500 / 100) = 1,500 / 15 = 100 seconds, or a 1:40 pace per 100 m.

What is a good swimming pace per 100m?+

It varies widely by ability. Recreational swimmers often hold 2:00 to 2:30 per 100 m, fitness swimmers around 1:40 to 2:00, and competitive swimmers under 1:20. Use your own times as the benchmark and aim to lower your pace gradually.

What is the difference between pace and speed in swimming?+

Pace is time per fixed distance, such as minutes per 100 m, so a lower number is faster. Speed is distance per unit of time, such as meters per second, so a higher number is faster. This calculator shows both from the same inputs.

How do I convert pace per 100 yards to per 100 meters?+

100 meters is about 9.4% longer than 100 yards, so multiply your per-100-yard pace by roughly 1.0936 to estimate the equivalent per-100-meter pace. A 1:30/100yd pace is about 1:38/100m.

Does this work for pool and open water swims?+

Yes. Enter the total distance and the total elapsed time for any swim, pool or open water. For open water, remember that currents, sighting and chop can make your effective pace slower than the same effort in a pool.
