How the Test Score Curve Calculator Works

A curve reshapes raw exam scores, usually to compensate for a difficult test. This calculator applies the three most common methods to a single score and shows the curved result and the points gained. Enter your raw percentage, pick a method, and the steps explain exactly what happened.

The Formula

Each curve method uses a different rule:

Flat add: curved = raw + bonus Linear scale: curved = raw × (target ÷ highest score) Square-root curve: curved = √raw × 10

The square-root form assumes a 0–100 percentage scale, which is why a perfect 100 maps back to 100 (√100 × 10 = 100).

How Each Curve Behaves

  • Flat add moves the whole class up by the same number of points. It is simple and predictable but can push high scorers over 100%.
  • Linear scale anchors the curve to the best student. The top score becomes the target (often 100), and everyone is multiplied by the same factor, keeping rankings and proportional gaps intact.
  • Square-root curve gives the biggest lift to the lowest scores and barely changes high scores. A 36 becomes a 60, while a 90 only rises to about 95.

When to Use a Curve

Instructors curve when an exam turns out harder than intended, when they want a target class average, or when they grade relative to the strongest performance. Because each method changes outcomes differently, it is worth running your raw score through all three to see the range of possible adjusted grades. Most schools cap any curved score at 100%.

How does the square root curve work?+

What is a linear or flat-scale curve?+

A linear curve multiplies every score by the same factor so the highest score in the class becomes a chosen target, usually 100. If the top score was 88 and the target is 100, every score is multiplied by 100/88. It preserves the gaps between students proportionally.

Which curve is the fairest?+

There is no single fairest curve; each changes outcomes differently. A flat add helps everyone equally in absolute points, a linear scale rewards the strongest student by anchoring to their score, and a square-root curve favors struggling students.
