How the Walking Pace Calculator Works
This calculator finds your walking pace and speed from any distance and time. Enter how far you walked (in km or miles) and how long it took in hours, minutes and seconds. It returns your pace per km and per mile, plus your speed in both km/h and mph.
The Formula
Pace = time ÷ distance (minutes per km or per mile — lower is faster) Speed = distance ÷ time (km/h or mph — higher is faster)
Pace and speed are just two views of the same walk: pace tells you how long each unit of distance takes, while speed tells you how much distance you cover each hour.
Worked Example
For a 5 km walk in 55 minutes:
- Total time = 55 minutes = 3,300 seconds
- Pace = 3,300 ÷ 5 = 660 sec/km = 11:00 min/km
- That is about 17:42 min/mile
- Speed = 5 ÷ (55 ÷ 60) ≈ 5.45 km/h (3.39 mph)
Walking Pace Reference
| Effort | Speed | Pace per km | Pace per mile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow stroll | 3.2 km/h | 18:45 | 30:00 |
| Average | 5.0 km/h | 12:00 | 19:18 |
| Brisk | 6.4 km/h | 9:23 | 15:05 |
| Power walk | 8.0 km/h | 7:30 | 12:04 |
Use the chart to set a target: nudging your pace from an average 12:00/km toward a brisk 9:23/km turns a daily walk into solid cardio exercise.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good walking pace?+
A comfortable average walking pace for most adults is about 5 km/h (3.1 mph), which is roughly 12 minutes per km or 19 minutes per mile. A brisk walk used for fitness is closer to 6.4 km/h (4 mph), about 9:20 per km, fast enough to raise your breathing but still let you talk.
How do I calculate my walking pace?+
Divide the time you walked by the distance you covered. If you walked 5 km in 55 minutes, your pace is 55 ÷ 5 = 11 minutes per km. To get speed instead, divide distance by time: 5 km in 55 minutes is about 5.45 km/h.
What is the difference between pace and speed?+
Pace is time per unit of distance, such as minutes per km or per mile, and a lower number is faster. Speed is distance per unit of time, such as km/h or mph, and a higher number is faster. This calculator shows both so you can use whichever your event or tracker uses.
How long does it take to walk a mile?+
At an average pace of about 5 km/h, walking one mile (1.61 km) takes roughly 19 minutes. A brisk walker doing 6.4 km/h covers a mile in about 15 minutes, while a relaxed stroll at 3.2 km/h takes closer to 30 minutes per mile.
How can I improve my walking pace?+
Focus on a slightly faster cadence rather than longer steps, swing your arms, keep good posture, and add short brisk intervals into your walks. Walking on flatter routes and tracking your pace over time with this calculator helps you see steady improvement without overstriding.
