How Alabama Paycheck Taxes Work

Your Alabama paycheck is your gross salary minus four things: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Alabama state income tax. This calculator applies the 2024 federal and Alabama rules to estimate your net (take-home) pay per pay period and per year, along with your effective tax rate.

Enter your annual gross salary, choose how often you are paid (annual, monthly, biweekly or weekly), and pick your filing status (Single or Married filing jointly). The result updates instantly.

Federal Taxes

Federal income tax is progressive: each slice of income is taxed at its own rate. For 2024, the standard deduction is $14,600 (Single) or $29,200 (Married filing jointly). Tax is then applied to the remaining taxable income across the brackets:

  • 10% up to $11,600 (Single) / $23,200 (MFJ)
  • 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% on higher bands
  • 37% on income above $609,350 (Single) / $731,200 (MFJ)

On top of income tax, the FICA payroll taxes apply to wages: Social Security at 6.2% on the first $168,600 of 2024 wages, and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 ($250,000 for married couples filing jointly).

Alabama State Income Tax

Alabama uses a progressive three-bracket system for 2024. For single filers the rates are 2% on the first $500, 4% from $500 to $3,000, and 5% on everything above $3,000. Married couples filing jointly hit each band at double those thresholds (2% to $1,000, 4% to $6,000, 5% above $6,000). Because the brackets are so low, virtually all wage income is taxed at the 5% top marginal rate.

Alabama also offers a state standard deduction and a personal exemption, which this calculator applies as a simplified flat amount before the brackets. Many Alabama cities — including Birmingham and several counties — additionally charge a local occupational tax of roughly 0.5%–2%, which is not included here.

Worked Example

  • Social Security (6.2%) = $4,030
  • Medicare (1.45%) = $942.50
  • Alabama income tax ≈ $3,010
  • Total tax ≈ $14,124Net pay ≈ $50,877/year (about $4,240/month)
  • Effective tax rate ≈ 21.7%
