How Arizona Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Arizona take-home pay is your gross salary minus federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Arizona state income tax. This calculator applies the 2024 federal and Arizona rules to estimate your net pay per pay period and per year, plus your effective tax rate.
Enter your annual gross salary, choose your pay frequency (annual, monthly, biweekly or weekly), and select your filing status (Single or Married filing jointly).

Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. For 2024 the standard deduction is $14,600 (Single) or $29,200 (Married filing jointly). The remaining taxable income is taxed across the brackets — 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% — with each rate applying only to the income that falls inside its band.
The FICA payroll taxes also come out of your check: Social Security at 6.2% on the first $168,600 of 2024 wages, and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 ($250,000 for married couples filing jointly).
Arizona State Income Tax
Arizona has one of the simplest income tax systems in the nation: a flat 2.5% rate for 2024. There are no brackets — whether you earn $40,000 or $400,000, taxable income is taxed at the same 2.5%.
Arizona begins from your federal adjusted gross income and allows a standard deduction that matches the federal amount ($14,600 single, $29,200 MFJ in 2024). The 2.5% rate then applies to the remainder. Arizona has no local or city income tax, so the state rate is the only state-level wage tax you face.
Worked Example
A single filer earning $65,000 in Arizona:
- Federal taxable income = $65,000 − $14,600 = $50,400
- Federal income tax ≈ $6,141
- Social Security (6.2%) = $4,030
- Medicare (1.45%) = $942.50
- Arizona income tax = 2.5% × $50,400 = $1,260
- Total tax ≈ $12,374 → Net pay ≈ $52,627/year (about $4,386/month)
- Effective tax rate ≈ 19.0%

Frequently asked questions
Does Arizona have a state income tax?+
Yes, but it is low. As of 2024 Arizona uses a single flat income tax rate of 2.5% on taxable income — one of the lowest flat rates in the country. Everyone pays the same 2.5% rate regardless of income level.
What is the Arizona income tax rate for 2024?+
Arizona's 2024 income tax is a flat 2.5%. The previous graduated brackets (2.55% to 2.98%) were collapsed into a single flat rate, so the rate no longer rises with income.
How much is taken out of my paycheck in Arizona?+
A single filer earning 65,000 dollars a year pays roughly 6,141 dollars in federal income tax, 4,030 dollars in Social Security, 943 dollars in Medicare and about 1,260 dollars in Arizona income tax — leaving roughly 52,627 dollars net, or about 4,386 dollars per month.
How is Arizona taxable income calculated?+
Arizona starts from your federal adjusted gross income and lets you subtract a standard deduction that matches the federal amount (14,600 dollars single, 29,200 dollars MFJ in 2024). The flat 2.5% rate then applies to what remains.
Does Arizona tax Social Security or retirement income?+
Arizona does not tax Social Security benefits. Most other retirement income is taxed at the same flat 2.5% rate, though up to 2,500 dollars of certain federal, state and local government pensions can be excluded. This calculator covers wage income.
