How Connecticut Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Connecticut take-home pay is your gross salary minus federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Connecticut state income tax. This calculator applies the 2024 federal and Connecticut rules to estimate your net pay per pay period and per year, along with your effective tax rate.
Enter your annual gross salary, choose your pay frequency (annual, monthly, biweekly or weekly), and select your filing status (Single or Married filing jointly).

Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. For 2024 the standard deduction is $14,600 (Single) or $29,200 (Married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed through the 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% brackets, each rate applying only to income inside its band.
FICA payroll taxes are also withheld: Social Security at 6.2% on the first $168,600 of 2024 wages, and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 ($250,000 for married couples filing jointly).
Connecticut State Income Tax
Connecticut runs a progressive seven-bracket income tax. For 2024 the rates are 2%, 4.5%, 5.5%, 6%, 6.5%, 6.9% and 6.99%. The big 2024 change was a rate cut on the two lowest brackets — the old 3% rate fell to 2% and the 5% rate fell to 4.5% — the first income-tax cut in the state since the tax was introduced.
For single filers, the 2% rate covers the first $10,000, 4.5% runs to $50,000, 5.5% to $100,000, 6% to $200,000, then 6.5%, 6.9% and 6.99% on higher income. Married couples filing jointly reach each threshold at roughly double those amounts. Connecticut also provides a personal exemption (which this calculator applies as a simplified flat amount; the real exemption phases out at higher incomes). Connecticut has no local income tax.
Worked Example
A single filer earning $65,000 in Connecticut:
- Federal taxable income = $65,000 − $14,600 = $50,400
- Federal income tax ≈ $6,141
- Social Security (6.2%) = $4,030
- Medicare (1.45%) = $942.50
- Connecticut income tax ≈ $2,000
- Total tax ≈ $13,114 → Net pay ≈ $51,887/year (about $4,324/month)
- Effective tax rate ≈ 20.2%
Connecticut Take-Home Pay at a Glance
Estimated net pay for a single filer, 2024 (federal + FICA + Connecticut income tax):
| Annual salary | Est. total tax | Net pay (year) | Net pay (month) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $45,000 | ≈ $7,959 | ≈ $37,042 | ≈ $3,087 |
| $65,000 | ≈ $13,114 | ≈ $51,887 | ≈ $4,324 |
| $85,000 | ≈ $20,144 | ≈ $64,857 | ≈ $5,405 |
| $120,000 | ≈ $32,569 | ≈ $87,432 | ≈ $7,286 |
Connecticut’s real personal exemption and a high-income “benefit recapture” can shift these figures, and they exclude 401(k) and health-insurance deductions and tax credits, so your actual paycheck may differ.
Frequently asked questions
Does Connecticut have a state income tax?+
Yes. Connecticut has a progressive state income tax with seven brackets ranging from 2% up to 6.99% for 2024. In 2024 the state cut its two lowest rates (from 3% to 2% and from 5% to 4.5%), giving middle-income workers a modest tax break.
What is the Connecticut income tax rate for 2024?+
Connecticut's 2024 rates are 2%, 4.5%, 5.5%, 6%, 6.5%, 6.9% and 6.99%. Single filers reach the 5.5% band around 50,000 dollars and the 6% band around 100,000 dollars; married couples filing jointly hit each threshold at roughly double the income.
How much is taken out of my paycheck in Connecticut?+
A single filer earning 65,000 dollars a year pays roughly 6,141 dollars in federal income tax, 4,030 dollars in Social Security, 943 dollars in Medicare and about 2,000 dollars in Connecticut income tax — leaving roughly 51,887 dollars net, or about 4,324 dollars per month.
Does Connecticut have local city income taxes?+
No. Connecticut does not allow cities or towns to levy a local income tax, so the state income tax is the only state-level tax on your wages. This calculator covers federal, FICA and Connecticut state income tax.
Why did my Connecticut take-home pay go up in 2024?+
Connecticut lowered its two lowest marginal rates for 2024 — the 3% bracket dropped to 2% and the 5% bracket dropped to 4.5%. Because these rates apply to the first slices of everyone's income, most filers saw a small increase in take-home pay.
