How the Bitcoin Profit Calculator Works
This calculator shows the profit or loss on a Bitcoin trade and the return on investment (ROI) as a percentage. Enter the amount of BTC you bought, your buy price, your sell price, and the fee rate your exchange charges. The result updates instantly and includes the full working so you can see exactly where the numbers come from.
The Formula
Trading fees apply to both the buy and the sell, so they are subtracted from each side:
Total cost = (buy price × amount) + buy fee Net proceeds = (sell price × amount) − sell fee Profit = net proceeds − total cost ROI = (profit ÷ total cost) × 100
The buy fee is the buy value multiplied by your fee rate, and the sell fee is the sell value multiplied by the same rate. A positive profit means a gain; a negative figure means a loss.
Worked Example
Suppose you bought 0.5 BTC at 40,000 dollars and later sold at 65,000 dollars, with a 0.5% fee on each side:
- Buy value = 40,000 × 0.5 = 20,000 dollars
- Buy fee = 20,000 × 0.5% = 100 dollars, so total cost = 20,100 dollars
- Sell value = 65,000 × 0.5 = 32,500 dollars
- Sell fee = 32,500 × 0.5% = 162.50 dollars, so net proceeds = 32,337.50 dollars
- Profit = 32,337.50 − 20,100 = 12,237.50 dollars
- ROI = 12,237.50 ÷ 20,100 = ≈ 60.9%
Why Fees Matter
Fees quietly erode returns, especially on frequent trades. A 0.5% fee on both ends of a round trip costs roughly 1% of the position before the price even moves. Always factor them in when you compare strategies.
| Buy price | Sell price | Amount | Approx. profit (0.5% fee) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30,000 | 45,000 | 1 BTC | ≈ 14,625 |
| 40,000 | 65,000 | 0.5 BTC | ≈ 12,238 |
| 60,000 | 50,000 | 0.25 BTC | ≈ −2,638 |
Profit and ROI shown here are pre-tax. Capital gains tax on crypto varies by country, so treat these figures as your gross trading result.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate profit on Bitcoin?+
Multiply your sell price by the amount of BTC and subtract the sell fee to get net proceeds. Then multiply your buy price by the amount and add the buy fee to get your total cost. Profit equals net proceeds minus total cost.
How is Bitcoin ROI calculated?+
ROI (return on investment) is profit divided by total cost, expressed as a percentage. If you spent 20,100 dollars (including fees) and ended with a 12,000 dollar profit, your ROI is 12,000 ÷ 20,100 = 59.7 percent.
Should I include trading fees in my Bitcoin profit?+
Yes. Exchanges typically charge a fee on both the buy and the sell, often 0.1 to 0.5 percent each. This calculator applies your fee rate to both legs of the trade so the profit figure reflects what actually reaches your wallet.
Does this calculator account for taxes on Bitcoin gains?+
No. It shows pre-tax profit and ROI only. Capital gains tax on crypto depends on your country, holding period and income, so check your local tax rules to estimate the tax owed on any realised gain.
What is a good ROI on Bitcoin?+
There is no fixed target. ROI simply measures how much your position grew relative to what you invested. A positive ROI means a gain and a negative ROI means a loss; compare it against other investments and the risk you took.
