How the Crypto Profit Calculator Works
This calculator shows the bottom line on a single crypto trade: your profit or loss, your return (ROI), and the total fees you paid. Enter the quantity of coins, your buy and sell price per coin, and the exchange fee percentage per trade.
How it works
Because exchanges charge a fee on both sides of a trade, the calculator applies the fee twice:
Cost = (buy price × quantity) + buy fee Proceeds = (sell price × quantity) − sell fee Profit = proceeds − cost ROI = profit ÷ cost × 100
Each fee is the trade value multiplied by your fee percentage.
Worked Example
Suppose you buy 0.5 BTC at $40,000, sell at $55,000, with a 0.5% fee per trade:
- Buy value = 40,000 × 0.5 = $20,000; buy fee = $100 → cost = $20,100
- Sell value = 55,000 × 0.5 = $27,500; sell fee = $137.50 → proceeds = $27,362.50
- Profit = 27,362.50 − 20,100 = $7,262.50
- ROI = 7,262.50 ÷ 20,100 = 36.13%
- Total fees = 100 + 137.50 = $237.50
The Hidden Cost of Fees
| Fee per trade | Round-trip cost | Profit on the example |
|---|---|---|
| 0.0% | 0% | $7,500.00 |
| 0.5% | ~1.0% | $7,262.50 |
| 1.0% | ~2.0% | $7,025.00 |
Even a small fee, charged on both the buy and the sell, quietly trims your return.
Smart Use of the Calculator
- Include every fee. Use your exchange’s real taker or maker rate, not a guess.
- Compare scenarios. Try different sell prices to set a target that clears fees and meets your profit goal.
- Remember taxes. This figure is pre-tax; set aside a portion of gains if your jurisdiction taxes crypto.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate profit on a crypto trade?+
Multiply your sell price by the quantity and subtract the sell fee to get proceeds, then subtract your total cost (buy price times quantity plus the buy fee). The difference is your profit or loss. Divide by cost for your ROI percentage.
How do trading fees affect crypto profit?+
Exchanges typically charge a percentage on both the buy and the sell, so fees apply twice. At a 0.5% fee, a round-trip trade costs about 1% of the traded value, which directly reduces your profit and matters most on frequent or small trades.
What is ROI on a crypto investment?+
Return on investment is your profit divided by your total cost, expressed as a percentage. If you spent $20,200 including fees and ended with $2,500 profit, your ROI is 2,500 ÷ 20,200, or about 12.4%.
Does this calculator handle losses?+
Yes. If your sell price is below your buy price, or fees outweigh a small gain, the profit and ROI turn negative and are shown in red so you can see the size of the loss at a glance.
Does it account for taxes on crypto gains?+
No. The tool shows pre-tax profit. Many countries treat crypto gains as taxable capital gains, so your after-tax profit will be lower. Check your local tax rules or consult a professional before relying on these figures.
