How the Ethereum Profit Calculator Works

This calculator shows the profit or loss on an Ethereum trade plus the return on investment (ROI) as a percentage. Enter the amount of ETH, your buy price, your sell price, and the fee rate your exchange charges per trade. The result and the step-by-step working update the moment you change any field.

The Formula

Fees are charged on both the purchase and the sale, so each is subtracted on its own side:

Total cost = (buy price × amount) + buy fee Net proceeds = (sell price × amount) − sell fee Profit = net proceeds − total cost ROI = (profit ÷ total cost) × 100

The buy fee equals the buy value times your fee rate; the sell fee equals the sell value times the same rate. A positive profit is a gain and a negative number is a loss.

Worked Example

Suppose you bought 5 ETH at 2,000 dollars and sold at 3,500 dollars, with a 0.5% fee on each trade:

  • Buy value = 2,000 × 5 = 10,000 dollars
  • Buy fee = 10,000 × 0.5% = 50 dollars, so total cost = 10,050 dollars
  • Sell value = 3,500 × 5 = 17,500 dollars
  • Sell fee = 17,500 × 0.5% = 87.50 dollars, so net proceeds = 17,412.50 dollars
  • Profit = 17,412.50 − 10,050 = 7,362.50 dollars
  • ROI = 7,362.50 ÷ 10,050 = ≈ 73.3%

Why Fees and Gas Matter

Ethereum trades carry both an exchange fee and, on decentralised platforms, network gas. Even a modest 0.5% fee on each side of a round trip costs about 1% of the position before any price change. Folding fees into the calculation keeps your profit figure honest.

Buy priceSell priceAmountApprox. profit (0.5% fee)
1,5002,50010 ETH≈ 9,800
2,0003,5005 ETH≈ 7,363
3,0002,4002 ETH≈ −1,254

The profit and ROI shown are pre-tax. Check your local capital gains rules to estimate the tax on any realised gain.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate profit on Ethereum?+

Multiply your sell price by the amount of ETH and subtract the sell fee to find net proceeds. Multiply your buy price by the amount and add the buy fee to find total cost. Profit is net proceeds minus total cost.

How is Ethereum ROI calculated?+

ROI is profit divided by total cost, shown as a percentage. If you invested 10,050 dollars including fees and made a 7,400 dollar profit, your ROI is 7,400 ÷ 10,050 = about 73.6 percent.

Should I include gas and exchange fees?+

Yes. Centralised exchanges charge a trading fee on each buy and sell, and on-chain swaps add gas. This tool applies your fee rate to both legs; for large gas costs, add them into your fee percentage or buy price.

Does this Ethereum calculator include taxes?+

No. It reports pre-tax profit and ROI. Crypto capital gains tax varies by country and holding period, so use your local tax rules to estimate any tax owed on a realised gain.

Can I use this for ETH staking rewards?+

This tool is for buy-and-sell trades, not staking yield. To value staking rewards, treat the extra ETH earned as additional amount sold at your sell price, or use a dedicated staking rewards calculator.
