How the Reading Time Calculator Works

Reading time estimates help writers set reader expectations (“5 min read”), help speakers fit a talk into a slot, and help editors decide whether a piece is the right length. Because the math is just words divided by speed, you stay in full control of the assumptions.
How it works
The formula is simple:
Minutes = word count ÷ words per minute
- Reading time uses a default of 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-fiction in English.
- Speaking time uses a default of 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and narration.
Adjust either speed to match your audience or material, and both estimates update instantly.
Worked Example
Suppose your article is 1,190 words:
