How the Silver Price Calculator Works
This tool estimates the value of silver from its weight, purity (fineness) and the current spot price. Enter a weight in grams, troy ounces, standard ounces, pennyweight or kilograms, pick the fineness, and type today’s spot price per troy ounce. It returns the pure silver content, the price per gram and the total melt value.
The Formula
Silver is priced per troy ounce, and only the pure silver in an item has metal value:
Pure content (troy oz) = weight in troy oz × fineness Value = pure content (troy oz) × spot price per troy ounce
One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams. Fineness is the purity as a decimal, so sterling silver is 0.925.
Worked Example
For 100 grams of sterling (.925) silver at a spot price of $29 per troy ounce:
- Weight in troy oz = 100 ÷ 31.1035 = 3.215 troy oz
- Pure content = 3.215 × 0.925 = 2.974 troy oz
- Value = 2.974 × $29 = ≈ $86.25

How do I calculate the value of silver?+
Convert the weight to troy ounces, multiply by the fineness (purity as a decimal) to get the pure silver content, then multiply by the spot price per troy ounce. For example, 100 grams of sterling silver is 3.215 troy oz × 0.925 = 2.974 pure troy oz, worth that amount times the spot price.
What is the fineness of sterling silver?+
Sterling silver is .925 fine, meaning 92.5% pure silver with the rest usually copper. Other common grades are .999 fine bullion, .958 Britannia, .900 coin silver and .800 silver. Only the pure silver fraction has melt value, so a .925 item is worth 92.5% of pure for its weight.
Is silver priced per troy ounce or gram?+
Silver spot prices are quoted per troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams. The calculator converts your entered weight to troy ounces before applying the spot price, so you can input grams, kilograms, troy ounces, standard ounces or pennyweight and still get a correct result.
Why do I have to enter the spot price myself?+
Silver trades on global markets and its spot price moves constantly, so any pre-filled value would be outdated. Look up the current silver spot price per troy ounce in US dollars and type it in to get an accurate, up-to-the-minute melt value.
Are silver coins worth more than melt value?+
Often, yes. Pre-1965 US coins, bullion rounds and collectible pieces can sell above their silver content because of demand, condition or rarity. The calculator gives the base melt value at spot; treat any premium for numismatic coins as additional on top of that figure.
