How the Strikethrough Text Generator Works

Type into the box and this tool instantly crosses out your words in four overlay styles — long stroke, short stroke, slash, and tilde. Press Copy under the one you want and paste it into a chat, caption, or bio, even on platforms that have no strikethrough button.

The line is not formatting that gets stripped on paste. Each character is followed by a Unicode combining mark that the font draws on top of the letter. Since those marks are genuine characters, the crossed-out look travels with the text wherever you paste it.

How it works

A combining mark is a special character that attaches to the one before it. The generator appends a chosen overlay mark after every non-space character:

StyleCombining markEffect
StrikethroughU+0336 (long stroke overlay)Full horizontal line
Short strokeU+0335 (short stroke overlay)Shorter horizontal line
SlashedU+0338 (long solidus overlay)Diagonal slash
Tilde overlayU+0334 (tilde overlay)Wavy line

Spaces and line breaks are skipped so the gaps between words stay clean.

Worked Example

Take the word done. The tool inserts U+0336 after each letter:

  • d + ◌̶ → d̶
  • o + ◌̶ → o̶
  • n + ◌̶ → n̶
  • e + ◌̶ → e̶

The result is d̶o̶n̶e̶, a fully struck-through word built from the original letters plus combining marks.

Tips for Using Strikethrough Text

  • Show edits playfully — cross out a word and follow it with the correction.
  • Pick the long stroke for the most reliable, widely supported line.
  • Preview on the target app, since a few fonts position the overlay slightly differently.

Frequently asked questions

How does this strikethrough text generator work?+

It adds an invisible Unicode 'combining mark' after every character. The mark renders as a line drawn through the preceding letter, so the text looks crossed out. Because the marks are real characters, the effect survives copy and paste into apps that lack a strikethrough button.

Where can I paste strikethrough text?+

Use it in Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp, Discord and most usernames and bios. It is handy anywhere a platform has no built-in strikethrough option but accepts Unicode text.

What is the difference between the strike, slash and tilde styles?+

Each uses a different Unicode combining overlay: the long stroke (U+0336) draws a horizontal line, the short stroke (U+0335) draws a shorter line, the solidus (U+0338) draws a diagonal slash, and the tilde (U+0334) draws a wavy line through each character.

Why does the strikethrough sometimes look misaligned?+

Combining marks are positioned by the font, so on a few fonts or older devices the line may sit slightly off-centre or break across wide characters. The effect still reads as crossed-out text on the vast majority of modern apps.

Is this the same as the strikethrough in Word or Google Docs?+

No. Word and Docs apply formatting that is lost when you paste into a plain field. This tool builds the line into the characters themselves, so it stays intact even where rich-text formatting is stripped, such as social media captions.
