How the eBay Profit Calculator Works
Selling on eBay looks simple until the fees come out. This calculator shows your real net profit after eBay’s final value fee, the per-order fee, your item cost and your shipping cost. Enter what the buyer pays, what the item cost you, and the fee rate for your category, and it returns net profit and profit margin instantly.
The Formula
eBay charges a final value fee as a percentage of the full order total (item price plus the shipping you charge), then adds a small fixed per-order fee. Net profit is what is left after fees and your own costs:
Gross = item price + shipping charged eBay fees = gross × final value fee % + per-order fee Net profit = gross − item cost − shipping cost − eBay fees
The default 13.6 percent rate plus a per-order fee reflects common eBay categories, but you should set the percentage to match your own category.
Worked Example
Suppose you sell an item for 50 dollars, charge 6 dollars shipping, the item cost you 20 dollars, your shipping cost is 5 dollars, the final value fee is 13.6 percent, and the per-order fee is 0.40 dollars:
- Gross = 50 + 6 = 56.00 dollars
- eBay fees = 56 × 13.6% + 0.40 = 7.62 + 0.40 = 8.02 dollars
- Net profit = 56 − 20 − 5 − 8.02 = 22.98 dollars
- Profit margin = 22.98 ÷ 56 = 41.0%
Where the Money Goes
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Buyer pays (item + shipping) | 56.00 dollars |
| eBay fees | 8.02 dollars |
| Item cost | 20.00 dollars |
| Your shipping cost | 5.00 dollars |
| Net profit | 22.98 dollars |
Tips for Accurate Results
- Match the fee percentage to your category. Final value fee rates differ by category, and some have tiered rates above a price threshold.
- Include all your costs. Packaging materials, eBay store subscription, promoted-listing ad fees and returns all reduce real profit but are not in the basic formula.
- Remember per-order fees. eBay adds a small fixed fee to each order on top of the percentage; the calculator includes this.
Important Notes
This calculator uses the fee structure you enter. Actual eBay fees vary by category, listing upgrades, promoted listings, your seller status and your country, and they change over time. Always confirm the current fees in your eBay seller account. This tool is for estimation only and is not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my eBay profit?+
Add the item price and the shipping you charge to get your gross. Subtract your item cost, your actual shipping cost, and eBay's fees (final value fee percentage of the gross plus the per-order fee). What remains is your net profit.
What is eBay's final value fee?+
The final value fee is eBay's commission on a sale, charged as a percentage of the total amount the buyer pays including shipping, plus a fixed per-order fee. The percentage depends on the category and is commonly around 13.6 percent for many categories, with a small per-order fee on top.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?+
Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the full order total, which includes the shipping and any handling you charge the buyer, not just the item price. That is why this calculator applies the fee to price plus shipping.
What profit margin should I aim for on eBay?+
Many resellers target a profit margin of 20 to 40 percent or more after all fees and shipping. The right number depends on your category, return rate and how quickly items sell. Use the calculator to test prices before listing.
Are eBay fees the same in every category?+
No. Final value fee percentages vary by category, and some categories have different per-order fees or tiered rates above a price threshold. Set the fee percentage in the calculator to match your specific category for an accurate result.
