How Georgia Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Georgia paycheck is reduced by four taxes: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Georgia state income tax. For 2024, Georgia made a major change — it replaced its old graduated brackets with a single flat 5.49% income tax.
This calculator takes your annual gross salary, pay frequency, and filing status, applies the 2024 federal and Georgia rules, and shows your net take-home pay per pay period and per year, with an effective tax rate.
Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. Your gross salary is first reduced by the 2024 federal standard deduction ($14,600 single, $29,200 married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed in brackets from 10% to 37%. Only income inside each bracket is taxed at that rate.
FICA taxes are flat:
- Social Security — 6.2% of wages up to the 2024 wage base of $168,600.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single; $250,000 for married couples filing jointly).
Georgia State Income Tax
For 2024, Georgia uses a flat 5.49% rate on Georgia taxable income, down from the prior top rate of 5.75%. The rate is part of a phased reduction that is scheduled to continue in later years.
The 5.49% applies after Georgia’s standard deduction, which for 2024 is $12,000 for single filers and $24,000 for married filing jointly. So the state tax is roughly:
Georgia tax = 5.49% × (gross salary − Georgia standard deduction)
This calculator uses that flat rate and standard deduction as a reasonable simplification; it does not model personal exemptions, dependents, or itemized deductions.
Worked Example
Take a $65,000 salary, filing single, paid biweekly:
- Federal income tax (2024 brackets) ≈ $6,141
- Social Security = 6.2% × 65,000 = $4,030
- Medicare = 1.45% × 65,000 = $943
- Georgia tax = 5.49% × (65,000 − 12,000) = 5.49% × 53,000 ≈ $2,910
- Total tax ≈ $14,023 → net annual ≈ $50,977
- Per biweekly paycheck: gross $2,500, net ≈ $1,961
- Effective tax rate ≈ 21.6%
Georgia Take-Home Pay by Salary
Annual net pay for a single filer, 2024 rules:
| Gross salary | Federal tax | Georgia tax (5.49%) | Net take-home | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $2,816 | $1,537 | $32,587 | 18.5% |
| $50,000 | $4,016 | $2,086 | $40,073 | 19.9% |
| $65,000 | $6,141 | $2,910 | $50,977 | 21.6% |
| $75,000 | $8,341 | $3,459 | $57,463 | 23.4% |
| $100,000 | $13,841 | $4,831 | $73,678 | 26.3% |
| $120,000 | $18,339 | $5,929 | $86,552 | 27.9% |
Married filing jointly lowers both federal and state tax — a $65,000 MFJ salary nets roughly $53,945 a year because of the larger standard deductions.

Frequently asked questions
Does Georgia have a state income tax?+
Yes. For 2024 Georgia switched from graduated brackets to a single flat rate of 5.49% on taxable income. The rate is scheduled to keep dropping in future years, but 5.49% applies to 2024 earnings after Georgia's standard deduction.
What is Georgia's income tax rate for 2024?+
Georgia uses a flat 5.49% income tax for 2024, replacing the old top rate of 5.75%. It applies to your Georgia taxable income, which is your gross pay minus the Georgia standard deduction of $12,000 (single) or $24,000 (married filing jointly).
How much is take-home pay on $65,000 in Georgia?+
On a $65,000 salary filing single, expect about $6,141 federal income tax, $4,973 in Social Security and Medicare, and roughly $2,910 Georgia state tax. That leaves about $50,977 net per year, or around $1,961 per biweekly paycheck.
Does the Georgia standard deduction lower my paycheck tax?+
Yes. Georgia's 2024 standard deduction ($12,000 single, $24,000 MFJ) is subtracted before the 5.49% flat rate is applied, which reduces the state tax withheld from your pay compared with taxing the full gross.
Is this Georgia paycheck estimate exact?+
It is a close 2024 estimate using the flat 5.49% rate and standard deduction. It does not include local taxes, pre-tax 401(k) or health deductions, credits, or other withholdings. For an exact figure, check your pay stub or payroll provider.
