How Hawaii Paycheck Taxes Work

Your Hawaii paycheck is reduced by four taxes: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Hawaii state income tax. Hawaii’s state tax is progressive, with a wide ladder of brackets from 1.4% up to 11% — one of the highest top rates in the United States.

This calculator takes your annual gross salary, pay frequency, and filing status, applies the 2024 federal and Hawaii rules, and shows your net take-home pay per pay period and per year, with an effective tax rate.

Federal Taxes

Federal income tax is progressive. Your gross salary is first reduced by the 2024 federal standard deduction ($14,600 single, $29,200 married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed in brackets from 10% to 37%.

FICA taxes are flat:

  • Social Security — 6.2% of wages up to the 2024 wage base of $168,600.
  • Medicare — 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single; the threshold is $250,000 for married filing jointly).

Hawaii State Income Tax

Hawaii uses many graduated brackets. For single filers the 2024 rates run 1.4%, 3.2%, 5.5%, 6.4%, 6.8%, 7.2%, 7.6%, 7.9%, 8.25%, 9%, 10%, and 11%, with the top 11% rate hitting taxable income above $200,000. Married-filing-jointly thresholds are double the single ones.

The brackets apply after Hawaii’s standard deduction, which for 2024 is just $2,200 (single) or $4,400 (MFJ) — much smaller than the federal deduction, so more of your income is exposed to state tax:

Hawaii tax = graduated rate × (gross salary − Hawaii standard deduction)

This calculator applies the graduated brackets and standard deduction as a reasonable simplification; it does not model personal exemptions, dependents, or itemized deductions.

Worked Example

Take a $65,000 salary, filing single, paid biweekly:

  • Federal income tax (2024 brackets) ≈ $6,141
  • Social Security = 6.2% × 65,000 = $4,030
  • Medicare = 1.45% × 65,000 = $943
  • Hawaii tax on (65,000 − 2,200 = 62,800) across the graduated brackets ≈ $4,435
  • Total tax ≈ $15,548 → net annual ≈ $49,452
  • Per biweekly paycheck: gross $2,500, net ≈ $1,902
  • Effective tax rate ≈ 23.9%

$50,000$4,016$3,198$38,96122.1%

$120,000$18,339$8,972$83,50930.4%

Married filing jointly lowers both federal and state tax — a $65,000 MFJ salary nets roughly $52,531 a year because of the larger standard deductions and doubled state brackets.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hawaii have a state income tax?+

Yes, and it is one of the steepest in the country. Hawaii uses graduated brackets running from 1.4% on the first slice of income up to a top rate of 11% on high earners, which makes Hawaii take-home pay lower than in many other states at the same salary.

What is Hawaii's top income tax rate?+

Hawaii's top marginal rate is 11%, which applies to taxable income above $200,000 for single filers (double that for married filing jointly). Lower income is taxed at the graduated rates below, starting at just 1.4%.

How much is take-home pay on $65,000 in Hawaii?+

On a $65,000 salary filing single, expect about $6,141 federal income tax, $4,973 in Social Security and Medicare, and roughly $4,435 Hawaii state tax. That leaves about $49,452 net per year, or around $1,902 per biweekly paycheck.

Why is Hawaii state tax so high on my paycheck?+

Hawaii has many narrow brackets that climb quickly, so a middle income lands in the 7%-8% range. Combined with one of the lowest standard deductions ($2,200 single), more of your income is exposed to state tax than in most states.

Is this Hawaii paycheck estimate exact?+

It is a close 2024 estimate using Hawaii's graduated brackets and standard deduction. It does not include pre-tax 401(k) or health deductions, credits, or other withholdings. For an exact figure, check your pay stub or payroll provider.
