How Indiana Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Indiana paycheck is reduced by four taxes: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Indiana state income tax. Indiana keeps the state portion simple with a flat 3.05% rate (2024) that applies to every income level. One important note: every Indiana county also charges its own local income tax, which this calculator does not include.
Enter your annual gross salary, pay frequency, and filing status, and the calculator applies the 2024 federal and Indiana rules to show your net take-home pay per pay period and per year, plus an effective tax rate.
Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. Your gross salary is first reduced by the 2024 federal standard deduction ($14,600 single, $29,200 married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed in brackets from 10% to 37%.
FICA taxes are flat:
- Social Security — 6.2% of wages up to the 2024 wage base of $168,600.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single; the threshold is $250,000 for married filing jointly).
Indiana State Income Tax
Indiana applies a flat 3.05% income tax for 2024. There is no state standard deduction; instead, Indiana grants a personal exemption of $1,000 per filer (so $2,000 for a married couple claiming two exemptions). The rate applies after that exemption:
Indiana state tax = 3.05% × (adjusted gross income − personal exemption)
On top of this, your county levies a separate local income tax that ranges from about 0.5% to over 3% depending on where you live. This calculator models only the 3.05% state portion as a reasonable simplification; add your county rate to estimate total Indiana withholding.
Worked Example
Take a $65,000 salary, filing single, paid biweekly:
- Federal income tax (2024 brackets) ≈ $6,141
- Social Security = 6.2% × 65,000 = $4,030
- Medicare = 1.45% × 65,000 = $943
- Indiana state tax = 3.05% × (65,000 − 1,000) = 3.05% × 64,000 ≈ $1,952
- Total tax ≈ $13,066 → net annual ≈ $51,935
- Per biweekly paycheck: gross $2,500, net ≈ $1,998 (before county tax)
- Effective tax rate ≈ 20.1%
