How Iowa Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Iowa paycheck is reduced by four taxes: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Iowa state income tax. In 2024 Iowa was mid-transition from a many-bracket system toward a single low flat tax, so 2024 wages used a compressed graduated schedule with rates from 4.40% to 5.70%.
Enter your annual gross salary, pay frequency, and filing status, and the calculator applies the 2024 federal and Iowa rules to show your net take-home pay per pay period and per year, plus an effective tax rate.
Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. Your gross salary is first reduced by the 2024 federal standard deduction ($14,600 single, $29,200 married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed in brackets from 10% to 37%.
FICA taxes are flat:
- Social Security — 6.2% of wages up to the 2024 wage base of $168,600.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single; the threshold is $250,000 for married filing jointly).
Iowa State Income Tax
Iowa applied a graduated income tax in 2024 with these brackets (same thresholds for single and married filing jointly that year):
| Iowa taxable income | 2024 rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $6,210 | 4.40% |
| $6,210 to $31,050 | 4.82% |
| Over $31,050 | 5.70% |
The tax is progressive, meaning each rate applies only to the portion of income within its band. This calculator applies the 2024 brackets to your gross wages as a reasonable simplification; it does not model Iowa itemized deductions or credits. From 2025 onward, Iowa replaced these brackets with a single 3.8% flat rate.
Worked Example
Take a $65,000 salary, filing single, paid biweekly:
- Federal income tax (2024 brackets) ≈ $6,141
- Social Security = 6.2% × 65,000 = $4,030
- Medicare = 1.45% × 65,000 = $943
- Iowa state tax (2024 brackets) = 4.40% × 6,210 + 4.82% × 24,840 + 5.70% × 33,950 ≈ $3,406
- Total tax ≈ $14,519 → net annual ≈ $50,481
- Per biweekly paycheck: gross $2,500, net ≈ $1,942
- Effective tax rate ≈ 22.3%
