How Louisiana Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Louisiana paycheck is reduced by four taxes: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Louisiana state income tax. In 2024 Louisiana used a graduated schedule with three rates — 1.85%, 3.50%, and 4.25% — before switching to a single 3% flat tax in 2025.
Enter your annual gross salary, pay frequency, and filing status, and the calculator applies the 2024 federal and Louisiana rules to show your net take-home pay per pay period and per year, plus an effective tax rate.
Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. Your gross salary is first reduced by the 2024 federal standard deduction ($14,600 single, $29,200 married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed in brackets from 10% to 37%.
FICA taxes are flat:
- Social Security — 6.2% of wages up to the 2024 wage base of $168,600.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single; the threshold is $250,000 for married filing jointly).
Louisiana State Income Tax
Louisiana applied a graduated income tax in 2024. Single filers used these brackets, and married couples filing jointly used the same rates with the thresholds doubled:
| Louisiana taxable income (single) | 2024 rate |
|---|---|
| $0 to $12,500 | 1.85% |
| $12,500 to $50,000 | 3.50% |
| Over $50,000 | 4.25% |
The tax is progressive, so each rate applies only to the income within its band. Louisiana also gives a combined personal exemption — $4,500 for single filers and $9,000 for married couples filing jointly — which this calculator subtracts before applying the rates as a reasonable simplification. From 2025, Louisiana uses a single 3% flat rate instead.
Worked Example
Take a $65,000 salary, filing single, paid biweekly:
- Federal income tax (2024 brackets) ≈ $6,141
- Social Security = 6.2% × 65,000 = $4,030
- Medicare = 1.45% × 65,000 = $943
- Louisiana taxable income = 65,000 − 4,500 exemption = 60,500
- Louisiana state tax = 1.85% × 12,500 + 3.50% × 37,500 + 4.25% × 10,500 ≈ $1,990
- Total tax ≈ $13,104 → net annual ≈ $51,897
- Per biweekly paycheck: gross $2,500, net ≈ $1,996
- Effective tax rate ≈ 20.2%
Louisiana Take-Home Pay by Salary
Annual net pay for a single filer, 2024 graduated rules:

|---|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $2,816 | $1,036 | $33,088 | 17.3% |
| $50,000 | $4,016 | $1,386 | $40,773 | 18.5% |
| $65,000 | $6,141 | $1,990 | $51,897 | 20.2% |
| $75,000 | $8,341 | $2,415 | $58,507 | 22.0% |
| $100,000 | $13,841 | $3,478 | $75,032 | 25.0% |
| $120,000 | $18,339 | $4,328 | $88,154 | 26.5% |
Married filing jointly lowers federal tax and doubles the state exemption and brackets — a $65,000 MFJ salary nets roughly $54,648 a year under the 2024 rules.
