How Massachusetts Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Massachusetts paycheck is your gross salary minus federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Massachusetts state income tax. This calculator applies the 2024 federal and Massachusetts rules to estimate your net (take-home) pay per pay period and per year, plus your effective tax rate.
Enter your annual gross salary, choose your pay frequency (annual, monthly, biweekly or weekly), and select your filing status (Single or Married filing jointly).

Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. For 2024 the standard deduction is $14,600 (Single) or $29,200 (Married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed across the 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% brackets — each rate applying only to income inside its band.
FICA payroll taxes also apply: Social Security at 6.2% on the first $168,600 of 2024 wages, and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages, with an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 ($250,000 for married filing jointly).
Massachusetts State Income Tax
Massachusetts uses a flat 5.0% income tax rate for 2024 — there are no graduated brackets for ordinary income. On top of that, the state applies a 4% “millionaire” surtax on the portion of income above $1,000,000, so very high earners pay an effective 9% on that top slice.
This estimate applies the 5% rate to your federal taxable income (gross minus the federal standard deduction) as a clean approximation. In practice Massachusetts uses its own personal exemption and deduction rules, which can shift the figure slightly, and the 4% surtax only affects income over $1 million.
Worked Example
A single filer earning $65,000 in Massachusetts:
- Federal taxable income = $65,000 − $14,600 = $50,400
- Federal income tax ≈ $6,141
- Social Security (6.2%) = $4,030
- Medicare (1.45%) = $943
- Massachusetts income tax = 5.0% × $50,400 ≈ $2,520
- Total tax ≈ $13,634 → Net pay ≈ $51,367/year (about $4,281/month)
- Effective tax rate ≈ 21.0%
