How Missouri Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Missouri paycheck is your gross salary minus federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Missouri state income tax. This calculator applies the 2024 federal and Missouri rules to estimate your net (take-home) pay per pay period and per year, plus your effective tax rate.
Enter your annual gross salary, choose your pay frequency (annual, monthly, biweekly or weekly), and select your filing status (Single or Married filing jointly).

Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. For 2024 the standard deduction is $14,600 (Single) or $29,200 (Married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed across the 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% brackets — each rate applying only to income inside its band.
FICA payroll taxes also apply: Social Security at 6.2% on the first $168,600 of 2024 wages, and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages, with an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 ($250,000 for married filing jointly).
Missouri State Income Tax
Missouri uses a graduated income tax for 2024 with a top rate of 4.8%. The brackets are narrow and inflation-indexed: the first roughly $1,313 of taxable income is taxed at 0%, and the rate then steps up through 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0%, 3.5%, 4.0% and 4.5%, reaching the 4.8% top rate on income above about $9,191.
Because every band above the exemption is small, most full-time workers reach the 4.8% marginal rate quickly, so the effective state rate sits a little below 4.8%. Missouri allows a standard deduction equal to the federal one ($14,600 single, $29,200 MFJ in 2024), which this calculator subtracts before applying the brackets. Kansas City and St. Louis add a separate 1% earnings tax that is excluded here.
Worked Example
A single filer earning $65,000 in Missouri:
- Federal/Missouri taxable income = $65,000 − $14,600 = $50,400
- Federal income tax ≈ $6,141
- Social Security (6.2%) = $4,030
- Medicare (1.45%) = $943
- Missouri income tax (graduated, ~4.8% top) ≈ $2,234
- Total tax ≈ $13,348 → Net pay ≈ $51,652/year (about $4,304/month)
- Effective tax rate ≈ 20.5%
