Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept un-reduced. Vowels are A, E, I, O, U (and Y when set above).
What is a numerology calculator?
A numerology calculator turns a name into its core numbers — the Expression (Destiny), Soul Urge and Personality numbers — by giving each letter a value, adding them up, and reducing the totals to a single digit or a master number. It is the name-based side of numerology, the companion to the birth-date life path number.
The tool above needs one input: a name. Type it in and you get three results at once, each with the working shown beneath, so you can see exactly how every letter was scored and how the totals collapsed. The whole thing is plain arithmetic on letters — no personal data leaves your device, and nothing is stored.
How does the numerology calculator work?
The calculator uses the Pythagorean system, where the 26 letters cycle through the digits 1 to 9. The value of a letter is its position counted in nines: A is 1, B is 2, on up to I at 9, then J starts the cycle again at 1. In formula terms:
letter value = ((letter − A) mod 9) + 1; sum the letters and reduce, keeping master numbers 11, 22 and 33
From those letter values the tool builds three numbers, each by adding a different set of letters and then reducing:
- Expression (Destiny) number — sums all the letters in the name.
- Soul Urge number — sums only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U).
- Personality number — sums only the consonants (everything that is not a vowel, including Y).
“Reduce” means add the digits of the total repeatedly until you reach a single digit (1–9), except that if a total lands exactly on 11, 22 or 33 the calculator stops there and keeps that master number. Spaces, digits and punctuation are ignored, so only A–Z affect the result.
The letter values in full are:
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, J, S |
| 2 | B, K, T |
| 3 | C, L, U |
| 4 | D, M, V |
| 5 | E, N, W |
| 6 | F, O, X |
| 7 | G, P, Y |
| 8 | H, Q, Z |
| 9 | I, R |
Examples
Every example below follows the method exactly — type each name into the calculator above to reproduce it.
Example 1 — John Smith. Letter values are J=1, O=6, H=8, N=5, S=1, M=4, I=9, T=2, H=8. Expression: all letters sum to 44, then 4 + 4 = 8. Soul Urge: the vowels o and i give 6 + 9 = 15, then 1 + 5 = 6. Personality: the consonants sum to 29, then 2 + 9 = 11, a master number that is kept. So John Smith is Expression 8, Soul Urge 6, Personality 11.
Example 2 — Jane Doe. Values J=1, A=1, N=5, E=5, D=4, O=6, E=5. Expression: all letters sum to 27, then 2 + 7 = 9. Soul Urge: vowels a, e, o, e give 1 + 5 + 6 + 5 = 17, then 1 + 7 = 8. Personality: consonants j, n, d give 1 + 5 + 4 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Result: Expression 9, Soul Urge 8, Personality 1.
Example 3 — Maria Garcia (a master Soul Urge). Values M=4, A=1, R=9, I=9, A=1, G=7, A=1, R=9, C=3, I=9, A=1. Expression: all letters sum to 54, then 5 + 4 = 9. Soul Urge: the six vowels (a, i, a, a, i, a) give 1 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 1 = 22, a master number, kept as-is. Personality: consonants sum to 32, then 3 + 2 = 5. Result: Expression 9, Soul Urge 22, Personality 5.
Example 4 — Emma Watson. Values E=5, M=4, M=4, A=1, W=5, A=1, T=2, S=1, O=6, N=5. Expression: all letters sum to 34, then 3 + 4 = 7. Soul Urge: vowels e, a, a, o give 5 + 1 + 1 + 6 = 13, then 1 + 3 = 4. Personality: consonants sum to 21, then 2 + 1 = 3. Result: Expression 7, Soul Urge 4, Personality 3.
Example 5 — Ava Khan (a master Expression). Values A=1, V=4, A=1, K=2, H=8, A=1, N=5. Expression: all letters sum to 22, a master number, kept as-is. Soul Urge: the three a vowels give 1 + 1 + 1 = 3. Personality: consonants v, k, h, n give 4 + 2 + 8 + 5 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Result: Expression 22, Soul Urge 3, Personality 1.
What each number means
This reference table lists the keyword themes traditionally attached to each result. The meanings are interpretive, not scientific — treat them as a starting point for reflection, not a verdict.
| Number | Common keywords (traditional numerology) |
|---|---|
| 1 | Independence, leadership, drive |
| 2 | Cooperation, balance, sensitivity |
| 3 | Expression, creativity, optimism |
| 4 | Structure, discipline, reliability |
| 5 | Freedom, change, adventure |
| 6 | Responsibility, care, harmony |
| 7 | Analysis, introspection, depth |
| 8 | Ambition, power, material focus |
| 9 | Compassion, idealism, completion |
| 11 (master) | Intuition, inspiration, heightened 2 |
| 22 (master) | Master builder, big-picture 4 |
| 33 (master) | Master teacher, nurturing 6 |
Within the three results, each number is read for a different layer: the Expression number describes your outward talents and direction, the Soul Urge (also called the Heart’s Desire) points at inner motivation, and the Personality number is the impression others form first.
Common uses
- Self-reflection and journaling, using each number as a prompt to think about strengths, motivations and first impressions.
- Comparing names between a birth name, a nickname and a married name to see how the numbers shift.
- Choosing or testing a name, such as a business, brand, pen name or baby name with a target number in mind.
- Content and curiosity, like checking the Expression number of a public figure or a character name for fun.
Tips and common mistakes
- Use the name you actually want to read. A full birth name, a nickname and a married name each give different numbers; pick the one whose energy you are asking about and stay consistent.
- Spelling changes the result. Different spellings, dropped middle names or accents stripped to plain letters all alter the totals, so type the name exactly as you mean it.
- Y is a consonant here. This calculator counts only A, E, I, O and U as vowels, so a name with Y will score it toward the Personality number, not the Soul Urge.
- Stop at a master number. If a total reaches 11, 22 or 33, it is kept rather than reduced to 2, 4 or 6 — that is the one exception to the reduce-to-one-digit rule.
- Only letters count. Spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and digits are ignored, so “Anne-Marie” scores the same as “Anne Marie”.
Limitations and notes
This calculator is exact in the arithmetic sense: the same spelling always produces the same three numbers, and the per-letter working lets you check every step by hand. It runs entirely in your browser, so the name you enter is never uploaded or stored.
The bigger caveat is the method itself. Numerology is a belief system, not a science. This tool uses the Pythagorean values with A, E, I, O, U as vowels, but other traditions — notably the Chaldean system, or schemes that treat Y as a vowel — assign letters differently, so results can legitimately vary from one site to another. The keyword meanings are traditional and interpretive. Treat the output as entertainment and a prompt for reflection, not as a prediction, a personality test, or advice for any health, financial or life decision.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate numerology from a name?+
Give each letter its Pythagorean value (A=1 through I=9, then J=1 again), add the values, and reduce the total to a single digit while keeping 11, 22 or 33.
What are the numerology numbers for John Smith?+
John Smith gives Expression 8 (letters sum to 44, then 4+4), Soul Urge 6 (vowels o and i, 6+9=15, then 1+5) and Personality 11 (consonants sum to 29, then 2+9), a master number.
What is the difference between the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers?+
The Expression (Destiny) number uses every letter, the Soul Urge uses only the vowels A, E, I, O and U, and the Personality uses only the consonants.
How are letters turned into numbers in Pythagorean numerology?+
Letters cycle 1 to 9: A-I are 1-9, J-R repeat 1-9, and S-Z run 1-8, so the value is the letter's position counted in nines.
What is a master number and why is it not reduced?+
11, 22 and 33 are master numbers; when a total lands on one of them the calculator stops instead of reducing to 2, 4 or 6, as they are seen as carrying extra weight.
Which letters count as vowels for the Soul Urge number?+
This calculator treats A, E, I, O and U as vowels for the Soul Urge; Y is read as a consonant and counts toward the Personality number.
Does the numerology calculator save the name I enter?+
No. The whole calculation runs locally in your browser, so the name you type is never uploaded or stored.
Why might my numbers differ from another numerology site?+
Some sites use the Chaldean system or treat Y as a vowel; this tool uses standard Pythagorean values with A, E, I, O, U as vowels, so totals can legitimately differ.
