What is a zodiac sign calculator?

A zodiac sign calculator tells you your western (tropical) sun sign from your birth date, plus the sign’s classical element — Fire, Earth, Air or Water. Your “sun sign” is the star sign people mean when they ask “what’s your sign?” — it is the slice of the zodiac the Sun was passing through on the day you were born, in the western system used by most horoscopes.

The tool above asks for one thing: your date of birth. Press Find my sign and it returns three results — your sun sign, its element, and the date range that sign covers. Everything runs instantly and privately in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

How does the zodiac sign calculator work?

There is no single numeric formula. The calculator reads the month and day of your birth date (the year is ignored) and matches them against the twelve fixed western sun-sign ranges. Whichever range contains your day decides your sign, and each sign carries a fixed element.

A few terms worth defining:

  • Sun sign / star sign: the zodiac constellation the Sun occupied on your birthday in the tropical system. It is the everyday “zodiac sign.”
  • Element: the classical grouping each sign belongs to. The twelve signs split evenly into four elements of three signs each.
  • Cusp: a birthday that falls right where two signs meet. Because these ranges do not overlap, a cusp date still lands cleanly in exactly one sign — the one whose range contains that calendar day.

The signs run in calendar order as shown below, with Capricorn wrapping across the New Year (it starts in late December and ends in mid-January).

The twelve zodiac signs, dates and elements

This reference table is the exact data the calculator uses. Find the range your birthday falls in to read your sign and element.

SignDatesElement
CapricornDec 22 – Jan 19Earth
AquariusJan 20 – Feb 18Air
PiscesFeb 19 – Mar 20Water
AriesMar 21 – Apr 19Fire
TaurusApr 20 – May 20Earth
GeminiMay 21 – Jun 20Air
CancerJun 21 – Jul 22Water
LeoJul 23 – Aug 22Fire
VirgoAug 23 – Sep 22Earth
LibraSep 23 – Oct 22Air
ScorpioOct 23 – Nov 21Water
SagittariusNov 22 – Dec 21Fire

Read across the elements and a neat pattern appears: the Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; Earth is Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; Air is Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; and Water is Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Every element has exactly three signs.

Examples

Here are worked examples you can reproduce exactly with the calculator above.

Example 1 — born 23 August. August 23 is the very first day of Virgo’s range (Aug 23 – Sep 22), so the result is Virgo, an Earth sign. A day earlier, 22 August, would instead be Leo.

Example 2 — born 1 April. April 1 sits inside the Aries range (Mar 21 – Apr 19), so it returns Aries, a Fire sign.

Example 3 — born 25 December. December 25 falls after Capricorn begins on December 22, so it returns Capricorn, an Earth sign. This is the sign that wraps the year, running through to 19 January.

Example 4 — a cusp date, born 23 September. September 23 is the first day of Libra (Sep 23 – Oct 22), so even though it sits right against the end of Virgo, the calculator returns Libra, an Air sign. The day the range starts always belongs to the new sign.

In each case only the month and day matter — entering 1990, 2003 or any other year for the same calendar day gives the identical sign and element.

Common uses

  • Reading horoscopes: know which daily, weekly or monthly horoscope column actually applies to you.
  • Compatibility curiosity: many people compare elements (for example, Fire-and-Air or Earth-and-Water pairings) when looking at relationships for fun.
  • Birthday gifts and themes: zodiac jewellery, mugs and prints are popular, and you need the right sign and symbol first.
  • Content and bios: quickly fill in the “star sign” field on a dating profile, quiz or social bio.
  • Settling debates: confirm a friend’s sign when their birthday lands near a boundary date.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Don’t guess on boundary dates. The exact start and end days vary by source elsewhere, but this tool uses one fixed, non-overlapping set of ranges — so let the table decide rather than rounding.
  • The year never changes your sun sign. Two people born on the same month and day share a sun sign regardless of birth year.
  • Sun sign is not your “whole chart.” Your rising (ascendant) and moon signs are different placements that need a birth time and location; this tool only gives the sun sign.
  • Western, not Chinese. This is the month-and-day western zodiac, not the year-based Chinese zodiac animal — those are separate systems.

Limitations and notes

This calculator returns the western tropical sun sign using fixed calendar date ranges, which is the standard convention for popular horoscopes. It deliberately does not compute the Sun’s precise astronomical position, which can shift a sign boundary by a day in some years, nor does it use the sidereal (Vedic) zodiac of Indian astrology, where the dates differ. It also does not include the thirteenth constellation, Ophiuchus, which is not part of the traditional twelve-sign zodiac. For a full natal chart you would additionally need your exact birth time and place. The result is meant for everyday, entertainment use, and it is calculated entirely on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my zodiac sign?+

Enter your birth date in the calculator above and press Find my sign — it returns your western sun sign, its element and the sign's date range.

What is my zodiac sign if I was born on 23 August?+

A birth date of 23 August is Virgo, an Earth sign, because 23 August is the first day of Virgo's range (Aug 23 – Sep 22).

What zodiac sign is 1 April?+

1 April is Aries, a Fire sign, since it falls inside the Aries range of Mar 21 – Apr 19.

What sign is someone born on 25 December?+

25 December is Capricorn, an Earth sign, because Capricorn runs Dec 22 – Jan 19 and wraps across New Year.

What is a cusp and which sign do I get?+

A cusp is a birthday next to where two signs meet; this tool has no overlap, so your date falls in whichever sign's range contains it.

What are the four zodiac elements?+

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).

Does the calculator need my birth year or time?+

No. Western sun signs depend only on the month and day, so the year and birth time do not change the result.

Is this the same as Vedic or sidereal astrology?+

No. This uses the western tropical zodiac with fixed calendar dates, which differs from the sidereal (Vedic) system used in Indian astrology.
