How Oregon Paycheck Taxes Work
Your Oregon paycheck is your gross salary minus federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and Oregon state income tax. This calculator applies the 2024 federal and Oregon rules to estimate your net (take-home) pay per pay period and per year, plus your effective tax rate.
Enter your annual gross salary, choose your pay frequency (annual, monthly, biweekly or weekly), and select your filing status (Single or Married filing jointly).

Federal Taxes
Federal income tax is progressive. For 2024 the standard deduction is $14,600 (Single) or $29,200 (Married filing jointly), and the remaining taxable income is taxed across the 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% brackets — each rate applying only to income inside its band.
FICA payroll taxes also apply: Social Security at 6.2% on the first $168,600 of 2024 wages, and Medicare at 1.45% on all wages, with an extra 0.9% on wages above $200,000 ($250,000 for married filing jointly).
Oregon State Income Tax
Oregon uses a graduated income tax for 2024 with four brackets running from 4.75% to a top rate of 9.9% — among the highest state rates in the United States. Tax applies to Oregon taxable income, your gross pay minus the Oregon standard deduction of $2,745 (Single) or $5,495 (MFJ).
For single filers the brackets are: 4.75% on the first $4,300, 6.75% from $4,300 to $10,750, 8.75% from $10,750 to $125,000, and 9.9% above $125,000. MFJ thresholds are roughly double. Because the 8.75% band is so wide, the bulk of a typical salary is taxed at 8.75%, which is why Oregon take-home pay runs noticeably lower than in most states. Oregon offsets this with no statewide sales tax.
Worked Example
A single filer earning $65,000 in Oregon:
- Federal taxable income = $65,000 − $14,600 = $50,400
- Federal income tax ≈ $6,141
- Social Security (6.2%) = $4,030
- Medicare (1.45%) = $942.50
- Oregon taxable = $65,000 − $2,745 = $62,255; Oregon income tax ≈ $5,146
- Total tax ≈ $16,260 → Net pay ≈ $48,740/year (about $4,062/month)
- Effective tax rate ≈ 25.0%

Frequently asked questions
Does Oregon have a state income tax?+
Yes — and it is one of the highest in the country. Oregon charges a graduated income tax for 2024 with four brackets from 4.75% up to a top rate of 9.9%. Oregon has no statewide sales tax, so the income tax does much of the work.
What is the Oregon income tax rate for 2024?+
Oregon's 2024 rates are 4.75%, 6.75%, 8.75% and 9.9%, applied progressively to Oregon taxable income. The 8.75% rate covers most middle incomes, and the top 9.9% rate applies above 125,000 dollars for single filers and 250,000 dollars for married couples filing jointly.
How much is taken out of my paycheck in Oregon?+
A single filer earning 65,000 dollars a year pays roughly 6,141 dollars in federal income tax, 4,030 dollars in Social Security, 943 dollars in Medicare and about 5,146 dollars in Oregon income tax — leaving roughly 48,740 dollars net, or about 4,062 dollars per month.
Why is Oregon's income tax so high?+
Oregon has no statewide sales tax, so it relies heavily on income tax to fund services. Even modest incomes land in the 8.75% bracket, which is why Oregon take-home pay is lower than in many other states at the same salary.
What is the Oregon standard deduction for 2024?+
Oregon's 2024 standard deduction is small — 2,745 dollars for single filers and 5,495 dollars for married couples filing jointly. Because the deduction is low, more of your income is exposed to Oregon's 4.75%–9.9% brackets than under federal rules.
