How the Pay Stub Generator Works
This tool turns an employee’s hours and pay rate into a pay stub showing gross pay, every deduction, and the final net (take-home) pay. Enter the regular hours and hourly rate, any overtime hours, a combined tax/FICA withholding percentage, a fixed insurance deduction, and a retirement contribution percentage. The stub updates instantly.
The Formula
Gross pay = (regular hours × rate) + (overtime hours × rate × 1.5) Deductions = (gross × tax%) + (gross × retirement%) + fixed insurance Net pay = Gross pay − Deductions
Overtime is paid at “time and a half” — 1.5 times the regular hourly rate.
Worked Example
An employee works 80 regular hours at $25/hr plus 4 overtime hours, with 18% tax/FICA withholding, a $60 insurance deduction, and a 5% retirement contribution:
- Regular pay = 80 × $25 = $2,000.00
- Overtime pay = 4 × $25 × 1.5 = $150.00
- Gross pay = $2,000.00 + $150.00 = $2,150.00
- Tax/FICA = $2,150.00 × 18% = $387.00
- Retirement = $2,150.00 × 5% = $107.50, plus insurance $60.00
- Total deductions = $387.00 + $107.50 + $60.00 = $554.50
- Net pay = $2,150.00 − $554.50 = $1,595.50

Important Note
This generator is for estimating and learning, not for producing official payroll documents. Real withholding uses government tax tables that vary by location, filing status and pay frequency. For legally compliant pay stubs, use payroll software or a qualified accountant.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate net pay from gross pay?+
Start with gross pay, then subtract every deduction: income tax and payroll (FICA) withholding, retirement contributions, health insurance and any other fixed amounts. What remains is your net, or take-home, pay. This generator computes gross from your hours and rate, then subtracts each deduction automatically.
How is overtime pay calculated on a pay stub?+
In the United States, non-exempt employees earn overtime at 1.5 times their regular hourly rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a week. This tool multiplies overtime hours by the hourly rate and then by 1.5, and adds that to the regular pay to get gross pay.
What deductions appear on a pay stub?+
Typical deductions include federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare (FICA), health and dental insurance premiums, and retirement contributions such as a 401(k). The pay stub lists each deduction so the employee can see how gross pay becomes net pay.
Is this pay stub accurate for taxes?+
The tool gives a clear estimate using a single combined withholding percentage you choose, but real paychecks use tax tables that depend on your filing status, allowances, pay frequency and state. Use the result for budgeting or a quick check, and rely on payroll software or an accountant for official stubs.
What is the difference between gross and net pay?+
Gross pay is the total earned before any deductions, including regular and overtime wages. Net pay is what actually lands in your bank account after taxes, insurance and retirement contributions are taken out. The gap between them is the total of all deductions.
